I would agree, remove most of it - ash in small quantities is ok, but not as you describe. Then add plenty of well rotted manure or compost.

To create cool area group blues greys and greens together, then add a patch of red for contrast
for all the year round interst you need some evergreen during winter, and some bulbs for spring.
There are lots of garden styles from formal to wildflower meadow, courtyard, country cottage, allotment, potager, informal park, formal park, wildlife garden, urban, modern, sophisticated town etc.....
in most cases we start with some sort of idea of how it should look and work from there

    Hi Nathan

I think the site is a really good idea, Not had much time in the past for gardening. But just come to the end of a long career in the forces and now have a largeish garden and a bit of spare time to get into it. As a beginner I really don't have a clue what I'm doing but with some help and advice from this site I hope to have a nice place to spend the long hot summers HA HA !!!!!. Hopefully we can all gain knowledge through this site, by sharing tips and experiences.

    Cheers The Tartan Terror

    Nathan et al,
Thank you for the welcome. My wife and I have never been gardeners but it's about time we did something with our garden. I was really pleased when I found this forum, it looks very well presented and the community seem really helpful and friendly. Im looking forward to learning, and who knows maybe one day my fingers will turn green and Ill even be able of offer advise in return.
