HB - no, quite the opposite - the chap along the road took it down, took it away, and hasn't quite got around to putting it up in his garden yet!

LoL - you have to be kidding!! But we have put in a patio wher m-in-law and I supposedly sit for our morning cuppa..... Photo of that later, maybe - just had a call to have a glass of wine in the dungeon.... So - must go! [IMG]

Sorry Dendy - not sure what "shire" roses are - but low or high roses do mix well with Lavender. How about a my favourite shrub rose in the far corner of the front garden - rosa de l'hay (? spelling) the perfume from my one just wafts everywhere with first and second flowering. And the hips mmmmmmmm. Not very vicious either :D

Yes, I know the one you mean - my neighbours have put in several of those, and some rosa rugosa, both as hedges. They smell and look great. Shires - sussex, kent, and several other counties all have roses named after them - I know various people who have several, and have a bed of "shires roses"! here's one of them at Peter Beales' site http://www.classicroses.co.uk/roses/search.php
