    Sadly, they can't.

I blame the nappy manufacturers. If they make nappies for 4 yr olds, people assume it is normal for a child that age to wear one. Before disposable nappies existed, most girls could be potty trained by 2 ... and boys a bit later. The motivation for the parent was less laundry, for the child feeling dry. Neither of these incentives exist now.

Anyone remember the dog trainer Barbara Woodhouse? I'm sure she claimed to have had her children out of nappies at a month or two old!

She probably trained them like dogs, to go out in the garden or perhaps a litter tray.

I've seen that too @KT53 including one where they'd had to get down a fairly steep, short slope next to the field that the road's beside, so that they could tie it to the branch of a tree where it met the hedge.
The mentality of these people is utterly unfathomable, or is it that thing of ' I can, so I will - and who's going to stop me? '

The problem with a lot of parents nowadays, as far as I can tell is - it's the school's job [or everyone else's] to raise their kids for them.
It's simple - don't bl**dy well have them if you can't be bothered actually raising them.

I still remember one episode of a Barbara Woodhouse training session. One of her standard training methods was to jerk back hard on the lead if the dog pulled. That's not so bad with larger dogs but she did it with a dog the size of a Yorkshire Terrier and the poor little thing did a complete backward somersault in the air.

The problem isn't the speed the bikes go at. As we all know, cyclists don't stick to any of the rules of the road, and speed limits can't generally be enforced against a cyclist. The problem is that the support vehicles can't keep up.

Exactly. That’s what the article says. The 20mph doesn’t apply to bikes (and I hope emergency vehicles either) But why can’t they all just do 20mph for that bit with the cars leading the way?

                Because it's a race, not a procession.

The 20 mph limit applies to the support vehicles with the spare bikes and wheels.
Because then it is a procession and not a race which somewhat defeats the object.
                  snap @KT53

Just lift the limit for the duration of the race for support vehicles. Simples! As the limit has been plucked "out of the air" in the first place, why would it matter?

I never realised that speed limits don't apply to bikes.

Interesting as our elder son is a cyclist and while on a training ride through a town they were stopped by the police as they were breaking the speed limit!

There is a 9 mph speed limit in the park, I think it applies to bikes as well, not that they take any notice of it.
Who came up with 9 mph is a mystery, 10 might have been more sensible.

I would have thought the safety issue is more about a JUNIOR race being held on open roads, not about the attending vehicles being unable to exceed the 20mph limit.
