In fact quite a lot of us do get quite a lot of news from the USA, as many of us have relatives who live there and have lived there for generations. My relatives and my husband’s relatives in the USA are deeply depressed, not only because an immoral person is going to get into power but because they see what effect he is going to have on other countries, such as ours. Among my friends here in UK there is an overwhelming feeling of hopelessness and foreboding. I have no more to say, as it’s pointless.

I would suggest that here in the UK we get far too much news about the USA at the cost of news from the rest of the world!
I'm actually surprised that the result was expected to be close. If Biden had accepted even 6 months earlier that he was not up to a 2nd term there would have been time to choose a candidate with more ability than Harris. As it was, the choice was between a convicted felon with even more charges still waiting and somebody who had been a failure as Vice President.
I'm just waiting for Trump to pardon himself for all the criminal acts he committed over the decades.

You'll not have long to wait @pete:biggrin:
Interesting to read @redstar that Trump as President is what you had voted/hoped for. Fingers crossed that it works out for you.
Agree that we get plenty of US news here in the UK but very rarely hear about Canada. If I remember right, the last real big news from there was mainly weather related. I only have one contact in Canada ( Toronto ) so don't get an overall view.
One thing that has amused me for years ( and continues to do so ) is the much vaunted belief in our "Special Relationship " with the US. Other than the fact that both our countries are quite fond of war mongering, it's difficult to see, from the average citizen's viewpoint, what the benefits of this are - to either country.

As an insomniac I listen to the BBC World Service every night. Invaribly, the accent is a North American one and more often than not the subject is too. I now think of it as Voice of America Two.

Obviously here in Devon we get a different World Service to Buxton, as yes there are American accents but not that many. For example Outlook, Science in Action, From Our Own Correspondent etc.
Also you have to bear in mind that there are a lot of Americans and American educated people in the world and it is easier to report from the USA than from say Russia or China.
I also tend to listen to the subject more than the accents involved.

I always thought American world news was like the American football world series or the Baseball world series, rarely anything to do with the rest of the world.

UK news, IMO, spends far too much time on foreign goings on and very little time on home news.

Wonder if any of you got to see the final results USA election map? Totally RED , except for tiny spots of blue here and there. Have to wonder why an overwhelming majority voted Republican.
America spoke loud and clear. Trump even won more votes in California than Biden did.

I can appreciate the change from foil and plastic wrappers to easily recyclable paper, and commend them for it, but the plastic tubs made very servicable cake 'tins'! Still, any little adaptation to help the environment has got to be a good step forward. Will miss the old shape of the purple one, though :frown:

                    That is astonishing.

The Democrats need a complete clear out and reset. I'm not confident they are capable of this though. They had 4 yrs from the 2016 election to come up with a strong candidate ... and could only manage Biden. They then had 4 yrs from 2020 to get a strong successor in place ... and didn't.

And Harris only won in states where voter ID was not a priority -----meaning she could care less the needs of actual American citizens. Trump won all 8 of the swing states, WE the American people will not forget what they tried to do to us and will vote RED forever.

In this election people woke up and got smart.

Just saw another map, shows only 15-20 little cities that votes blue in all of USA, not a whole state. so those little blue spots need to assess their thinking. The TRUMP train is running. Looking forward to January 20, 2025.

Ending my comments . take care.
