What are we doing in the garden 2024

Just back from a garden check: It will take me hours to get the leaves back where they were - once the storm is over.

 

Nothing done outside yesterday due to rain/sleet/snow/hail/ice [in that order!] and wind. Snow's now all gone as we had high temps overnight [more weird weather] and it's to be mainly dry but windy.
I doubt I'll do much though, as there isn't really anything important that requires it. Everything that matters is sorted well before this point in the year, and it's only odd, unimportant things that can also be left. Daughter is off so it'll possibly be a double walk anyway.

 

Nothing today it's raining and there's not much to do at the moment.

The storm had blown a row of small pots with violas off my windowsill so I went out in the torrential rain to pick them up off the paving. Luckily this time I'd used plastic pots and not my usual small terracotta pots, The gritty compost has gone everywhere of course. My fault, it was so, so wet all day yesterday I didn't want to venture out to secure everything.
There is now rather a large puddle under the bottom sleeper of the leaning retaining sleepers. We were hoping that would be rebuilt tomorrow - fat chance!

 

Filled the feeders, filled the watering can with rain water for the orchids and insectivorous plants. Picked some salad leaves and kale from the tunnel. Checked the roof because of the noise in the night we thought some tiles had come down but thankfully all ok. Then found a huge branch broken off from the magnolia grandiflora. Maybe that was the noise we heard.

 

I’ve got a bit of clearing up to do but as the lawn and borders are still saturated I’m going to wait until tomorrow. Lots of dried grass leaves and Hydrangea flowers have blown about and there’s more leaves from my Acer to collect, including a few in the birdbath .

 

I raked leaves and when I was done I got a bit curious about my finished up tree lilies and got a lovely surprise. There were 2 seeds that hadn't been eaten.

Potted them with hopes they germinate. Aren't I an optimistic gal? I think I might live long enough to see flowers if I'm successful.

I did some clearing of annuals yesterday in between my two walks. All the sweet peas are down now - they did well, even with the low temps last week, but the snow finally trashed them. I've still got one container to do, but I'm hoping to get some seed pods from them. It won't get done today though due to the weather. I'll wait until it's a bit more favourable.

You're needing to do a wee cage for your leaves @simone_in_wiltshire. That'll save you going back and re doing the job!
Good luck with your seeds @CanadianLori - not something I've tried with lilies. Hope you get a result...at some point!

 

Nothing going on here. Too wet and windy. Not so cold today thank goodness.

 

OH cut down the Royal Bumble salvia yesterday and mulched his rhubarb. Latter is a new venture for him so he is following the rules to the letter. Hope it works out for him. I stayed indoors as it was too cold and windy for me.

When I came into the garden today, everything had changed. The wind has blown the leaves away and I only had to clear the entrace

 

I note a similar thing @simone_in_wiltshire , most of the leaves on the path and grass have been blown away, probably all in the borders.
We have been emptying large pots and containers so we can finally plant the Tulips.
