I wish I could be that philosophical  Is there any other single pastime that has been so effectively kyboshed, I wonder? It used to be one of the main pleasures of gardening, sharing seeds and plants :)

I did not get flowers last year on the one I did from seed. They die back-ish here, well lose their leaves. I'll check later.

I think you will find they are deciduous, so do drop their leaves, but I always find the ends of the shoots dont ripen before winter so they dont shoot from the tips but usually from buds lower down.
They are hardy but like hot summers.

Potted up a few more chitted broad beans and a couple of sprouted sweet pepper seeds.
Not exactly all go at the moment is it.

Raked a bit, pulled out the remaining leeks that were mostly rotten, pulled out the finished brussels, chopped prunings from the fruit bushes into small bits for the compost heap.

Too soggy to weed, so potted up some rooted cuttings of cantua in the greenhouse. Found some germinating erythronium (from Jan 2022!) So added grit to the pot surface to try to dissuade slugs. It's a great excuse to not be too tidy and throw out pots of seed in case they take a while.

Thank you @Retired. I agree that branches look bigger on the ground and they're a lot heavier than they look. Pine branches have heavier foliage too.

I don't like the word 'storm', it seems to be a fashionable term for a gale in recent years. Having lived here in the highlands for seven years now, I can honestly say that we've had a few gales that have brought down a few trees or branches, but none that would be dangerous. The weather is more settled here than many think. I've experienced two hurricanes and would class those as storms, but neither of them here. One in southern England and the other on the Isle of Man and didn't experience any damage with either, luckily.

What I did notice with both the hurricanes is that the wind noise becomes very low in pitch, more of a bass sounding moan than a gale.

Edit: The branch is no more - I've had a bonfire today. :)

Been out to see the branch that was blown down last night. It seems to have shattered when it left the tree as there's one large bit, two smaller pieces and a number of fragments. Fortunately not a lot damaged. Moved the smaller pieces off the Azara microphylla while nothing snapped on this shrub, one piece might need removing if it doesn't return to upright this week. The bigger piece has been moved off the Fuchsia microphylla which promptly sprang back; this bigger piece will need cutting up to an extent before it can be fully removed as it is stuck in the ground and tangled up in some other shrubs. Job for the end of the week that.
Curious thing is that a branch, on the same tree, that snapped part way through 5 years ago and hangs like a pendulum is still in place.
