As you know agaves are a bit hit and miss here but the one reasonably big A. americana I have is looking bad due to black spots, its got a rain cover but we have had so much rain I cant keep it dry.
Some of the yuccas are the same, they do better in cold winters than mild ones I find.

To be honest, they're a bit of an embarrassment. I planted out pots of succulents with baby Agaves mixed in, and they've gone berserk. The biggest blue one is 5' wide and high with americana variegata not far behind. They're suckering like crazy too. Pushing up through the tarmac of the lane that runs in front of the house :hate-shocked: It's certainly put paid to regular trimming of the lavender hedge behind them  I said I wouldn't have any spiky or thorny stuff here but you can't get much spikier than Agaves....Damn' things are growing in pure clay too :roflol:

Well this just points out how different your climate is to here, apart from around the coast I rarely see any agaves yet alone happy ones.
I know you say you get frosts, but they must be shorter lived and maybe the higher summer temperatures help.

Finished cutting the old flower stems off the rest of the lavender and did some weeding.

I finished getting the metal cloth fitted to the vegetable garden barrier with the exception of one pair of gates. I only have enough of the really nice 19ga 1/2" and coated in green plastic mesh to cover the areas facing the lawn/house but the rest of the netting going around the back doesn't look bad. I kept enough of the "good stuff" to do those last pair of little gates as soon as I recieve the parts I need.

I also turned all of the upper soil in that area, excluding the chive and rhubarb sections. The chives forgave me for moving them again last year and I hope the rhubarb will follow suit.

It felt marvelous to get so much done before the next big deep freeze hits ;)

And I received a fantastic amount of Vitamin D. It doesn't get better than that!

This winter has been incredibly mild and wet. A couple of -6Cs in January but only light ground frosts otherwise. Never two the same, though  How do you plan/plant for that?

You might be barking up the wrong tree Pete. Let's hope it re-shoots as it looks very bare at the moment.

Well that's all my Buddleias cut right back to the low buds. Bit early maybe but I've reached that stage in life where I have to do things when I remember. All the spoil (loads of it) shredded down and added to the compost heap. Mowed the lawns last week as well but even grass isn't getting the temperature up in there. Maybe some urine is required

I pruned my Buddleia at the weekend and I thought I was a bit late doing it - there was lots of new green growth on what I chopped off and shredded.
