@Bluejayway .Pyracantha is a beast , pretty to look at , horrible to handle . I made the mistake of planting it as a hedge two moves ago and dug it out. I also grew a rosa rugosa hedge which was beautiful but after sustaining an infection from the spines requiring medical assistance and it suckering into the lawn i dug that up too. I now avoid anything with spikes and spines except for an autumn king holly hedge which is virtually prickle free. I am still tempted to create a rose bed but we shall see.

Roses are lethal ! I've got a greenhouse full of cacti and I've had more injuries from roses than I've had from my cacti since I started collecting them in the 1960s. In fact I've never had any injuries from my cacti.

That’s a good price, @pete. :blue thumb: On the manufacturer’s website, the price is about double.

@Michael Hewett . My dad was a big fan of cactus and had a grenhouse full of an assortment of spiny beggars and lush succulents. I had a very uncomfortable initiation when i took a liking to what dad always referred to as the Micky Mouse Ears cactus . It looked so soft i ran my hand across it and of course i ended up with a handful of fine spines which took forever to remove .I would only have been 8 or 9 and i learned a very swift lesson about respecting cactus.

It appears to be a sale and as usual time limited.
They are basically small chainsaws but with a retractable top guard.

Is there a list of month by month gardening jobs and seed planting anywhere? I’m usually late with everything or I’ve missed when things need to be done so I was hoping to change that this year. Thanks.

I’ve started one for for me for January, but happy to share - feel free to add to the list / comment:

Plant seeds - rhubarb, strawberry, onion, chilli, pepper, hollyhock, celery, parsley, delphinium, geranium, antirrhinum, sweet pea, verbena

Prune patio apple and pear trees

                      Plan raised beds

                      Chit first early seed potatoes

                      Mulch spring bulbs

Cover rhubarb plants with a bucket or terracotta pot to force

The RHS publication "Gardening through the year" by Ian Spence is a good place to start..

I don't sow any seeds in January, @kazzawazza, too soon, too cold, unless you have a good heated (expensive) greenhouse. What do you do with the young plants when they've germinated, need potting on and there is no room left in your house?

I have been out and done some more pruning and tidying up. I didn't stay out long as my back started to ache and it's too cold to sit down for long.
