Coppiced one of the hazels. We have 5 and each is coppiced in the 5 year rotation. One year we did manage to harvest some hazel nuts but the squirrels get there all the time now.

Just pruned (for pruned read hacked back) some out of control roses that we inherited with the property. They are bog standard type, probably 30-odd years old, and, hopefully, will appreciate the attention:love30:

Today it’s reached the heady heights of 8C so I have removed the leaves and fleece stuffed into the crown of my tree fern to let it warm up and get some air. I also removed about half the number of fronds, leaving six of the best which haven’t been blackened by frost. It looks much better :). There’s still some snow on the lawn and borders so I’ll wait until tomorrow to do some clearing up.

@lizzie27 Re. Felcos I have replied to you on the wake wakey thread.
Without repeating everything, the ones shown above are NOT, Felco originals so I don't know what the quality is like. Maybe the GC's we go to overcharge but a NO 2 blade alone costs nearly £25, a no 6 may be a bit less as they are smaller. If you don't want to pay Felco prices then Darlac and ARS are both good alternatives.

They are Felco Essential secateurs @Allotment Boy, a budget alternative to the Original range, for small hands, but still a Felco product. I agree that Darlac and ARS are good alternative brands, I buy products from all three :).

It's thawed a lot overnight so the garden is gradually beginning to emerge and there are parches of green. The birds are happy and so am I. It's not what you could call a nice day, as it's dull and murky, but I can walk on the terrace more safely and I can finally get into the green-house!
Despite the cold the bubble wrap seems to have done it's stuff and everything appears ok, just a few tubs that needed watering. There's a nice little tray of cabbagy plants that can go out after hardening off and I'll hope the deer don't come back again. There's some straggly Gaura and some decent little Hollyhocks to pot on. These are first timers for me, so I'm glad they've made it so far, and there are a few other bit's and bobs. Its in dire need of some tidying up though, but that can wait till it's a tad warmer!
Best off all, I finally sent off my seed order yesterday and all being well it should be here by the end of the week. If I had done it earlier I still wouldn't have got it yet because of the snow:smile: We only got our first delivery of anything today - some much needed hay for the sheep. There must be some post lurking somewhere too.

Good, there’s some frost due here later this week so mine will be covered up again :).

Today I spent about half an hour tidying up some of the damage caused by the recent snow and ice. I cut three clumps of Panicum to the ground, trimmed the flowers and stalks off some Sesleria and cut back five remaining clumps of Hakonechloa. I also removed a bamboo cane which had been damaged. Next month should be easier for me, I’ve pruned most of my deciduous grasses over the last few weeks due to damage, I usually do them all at the end of February.

I had intended to carry on with some general garden tidying but I feel asleep in the chair and awoke two hours later …..:roflol:
