I’ve done some glaring at bare patches of ground where there ought to be shoots too today, @Jess91. :)

So, if a plant is showing no signs of growth, is it worth digging up any roots and putting these in a pot to see if it springs to life?

Did some weeding and planted out 3 Erigeron Azure Beauty that I bought from B&Q in the week. Also planted out a Leucathoe Rainbow and a Skimmia Rubella that had both been sitting in pots on my patio for weeks. Pruned some fuchsias. Generally pottered and looked at things - Astrantia Shaggy is starting to emerge in several places, and there are some shoots appearing in one of my lily pots.

Felt like a sunny June day today! Seed sowing, re-potting, faffing and generally making my hands grubby (yet another pair of gloves with a hole in!).

Potted up 6 Verbascum phoenicum Rosetta and 6 white plugs from Jparkers. The plugs look great and most had two plantlets together. Considered separating them but decided not to, to avoid disturbance.

And as I don't really have the room for six each, even more plants would be a bit awkward. Please don't ask how I plan to cope with them in the coming years.

Decided to allow the Iris roots to soak overnight before potting them up tomorrow.

Everything is in the pantry as the night temperatures are expected to be low so I don't want to shock them with cold greenhouse temperatures. Just for tonight, I promise!

Made some more posh plant labels and googled instructions for my experimental veg seedlings (Kohlrabi, Mooli, Pak Choi etc) which I may want to start in modules.

Gave approving nods at the Chillies, Peppers and Tomatoes on my home office desk and windowsill. My boss probably thinks I have an issue with my neck  I'll have to start claiming I have issues with the camera during work Teams meetings.

I finished the greenhouse shelving project and am very pleased with the result, hopefully no more pots falling between the shelve rails. Cutting the steel mesh was hard work on my hands though and I resorted to wearing my leather extra thick rose pruning gauntlets. Now to sort out the over-wintering plants. 20250404_131542.jpg

                Lots of watering...
Also checking for lily beetle. I've found 5 already - 3 in imperial fritillary in pot, and 2 in early lily.
Despite carefully removing any larvae found in veg bed when digging it earlier, I'm now finding peas and broad beans planted there showing evidence of vine weevil damage. Where were they hiding?

@pete well it's little curved nibbles around the edges of the leaves. Unfortunately I don't have any non-legume in that bed to compare (except raspberries)

I’m giving some of my “no shows” a couple more weeks @ViewAhead. As it’s been quite dry, I’ve watered the area where I think they should be. Then, if nothing happens it’s plan B - the space will be rewarded to a more worthy performer .

If you just pass your hand through the plants during the warmest part of the day you see them jump.

Not sure :dunno: My rudbeckia is in a pot, I bought it as bare roots in a bag, and planted it in early March in a pot. It's been in the propagator since, along with an Echinacea that also came as a bare root from the same place, which has grown and now has lots of new leaves.

I'll be annoyed if it doesn't grow :nonofinger:

I noticed today, that a clump of White Rock ( Cerastium asa Snow in Summer ) was starting to look a bit poorly after beginning to look really good last week. This plant was planted at the corner of a veg patch OH created last year as a raised bed. Nearby is a ) new) rhubarb plant which has just started sprouting new leaves too.
On closer inspection, I found an absolute colossal infestation of tiny ( young?) green flies/fly completely smothering the White Rock plant and which had made its way over to the rhubarb….which was covered under leaves, on top of leaves and starting up the main stems of rhubarb. I have never seen so many, all over the place, up the boards of the raised bed and totally engulfing a plant. No wonder the poor plant was looking poorly. OH couldn’t believe it when I showed him. They certainly made me itch all over:itchy::wow: and grit my teeth :yikes:

We had this problem with an oak tree stump. We had to hire Stumpman (our local stump remover). He turned up with a strange machine and spent several hours grinding it out. He did the job and it was not that expensive. Luckily we had access to the back garden that was wide enough, although the machine wobbled sideways and broke a pane of glass in the greenhouse! We were then able to plant shrubs there.
