WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2021

Transplanted Million Bells plant (survived from last year) from plastic hanging pot to Coir lined basket. Took cuttings of Tradescantia (Andersoniana Group) 'Blushing Bride' and planted in Coir lined basket and planted five Kiss of Death Hibiscus seeds. Pruned the Jatropha integerrima and two Thevetia peruviana shrubs and trimmed a few Mandevilleas.

finished on the lotty for today. it's had a tidy up and I've filled the new recycled waterbutt planters.




I've just painted and old drawer which I'll take up to the lotty and use as a planter.

 

That's the tidiest allotment I've ever seen.

 

I've been repairing the lawn edge today , quite a lot of damage to it from last year. Got loads of moss on the back lawn worst its ever been , I'll attack it later on in the week with the scarifier and do a full lawn treatment plan to get it back in to shape.

Been a nice afternoon and its staying light longer which is making a difference , were nearly out to 7pm

 

Yesterday hubby pruned a few more roses, he can't manage to do a lot at once anymore because of his back.

I've got 10 of each, Pegasus, Elsanta & Cambridge Favourite. I'll also me throwing in a handful of 3 year old Temptation (which I've never been particularly impressed with). I know I should be aiming to get no fruit this year but I'm just going to accept a lower crop. I'll have to dig them all up later this year anyway to move house so I'll probably lose a few along the way and have to re-establish a new patch in the new house.

Going to get the OH involved this weekend in helping me do the mulching membrane.

 

Took some rose cuttings, they're hard wood cuttings so don't know if they'll take.

I've scarified the lawn this afternoon.

Its not been a good day the Garden Centre mugged me off , told them they've added up my stuff wrong about £20 under what it should of been so I mentioned it , they then overcharge me thought I added it up in my head wrong only to realise after . Didn't lose out on a lot £6.50 but to say I could of walked out paying about £20 less possible saving someone job / telling off I am a bit miffed . The fire alarm at home then had me for a clown up and down the stairs, turn one off then the other goes off upstairs 4 times it had me going round 3 alarms running up and down, the 4th time the alarm upstairs went off it entered the bin .

 

I had a cautious prod at the roots of a chocolate cosmos and thought I found vine weevils I've now googled around and think they're actually potworms. I'd much rather have them than weevils if option C: no weird, white, wiggly things is off the table lol. I think the cosmos is dead though if they're going for the roots - tends to infer they're rotting if I'm understanding right. I shall try again with another cosmos this year and try to be more careful with it.

My new rail pots have arrived - just waiting impatiently now for the plants to go in them

 

My first afternoon's work in the garden since the beginning of November - bad weather hasn't allowed it. Very Spring like today, sunny with a strong breeze but dry.

I've pruned and fed the roses and cut the Lonicera back by two thirds. Also taken the growing tips out of both young Ilex. I'm hoping one, now pretty much branchless, will put out new growth after an unwelcome visit from deer. It looks very sad at the moment.

 

Thanks @shiney -you're right-the tree chap has advised us on what to do and when. They'll be good for another two years yet and then hoorah-hopefully the posts can go! they are ugly! This year I can't wait for spring to get going so I can cut off the height and make them grow bushier.

 

@shiney if you grew something for the rabbits they might not eat what don't want them to eat, like clover and it will be good for the bees.
