Off out to pull up more nettles which appeared after the recent rain. Final planting of perennials I took as cuttings last Autumn. Water pots and hanging baskets.
All whilst listening to the cricket

Nothing planned for today. It is blowing a gale with rain not far away. I am always disappointed when I cannot get some serious work done.

Not happy with the way the soaker pipes work in the greenhouse. So im building a water system using speedfit plumbing and will drill holes in certain places in the pipe were i want the water to go and give a better control over watering.

But rain as currently stopped play ( cutting pipes outside the greenhouse)

I use this low flow stuff for all of my raised gardens and containers. This is a link to one of their catalog pages. I'm sure that many other retailers sell these all around the world.

The pipes and pieces are all pressure fit and believe me, they are very efficient. I use the "shrubbler" spikes in my pots.

Much easier than trying to drill through and control the flow that way.

We did a fair amount this morning, between having people popping in for plants, and I've been filling large pots with compost for Mrs Shiney to fill up with patio plants that have been waiting patiently (or could have been impatiently :noidea:) in the greenhouse. 240 litres of compost later I have had enough for the day. So has the wheelbarrow that now has a flat tyre! I've removed it and shall take it to the tyre place down the road. I think it needs a new inner tube.

It's much too hot to continue out there so I have put the sprinkler on one part of the veg plot, carried buckets of water to the Dahlias that were planted last week and shall move the sprinkler to another part of the veg plot later. The beans are now between knee and waist high and growing quickly but are going to need lots of water as the forecast is hot and sunny for the next eight days, reaching 28C by the end of the week, and then dry but cooling down for the following week.

I fitted a watering system in the greenhouse about forty years ago but we now water the greenhouse with the hose twice a day.

Time for feet up with a choc ice in hand.

Not much as was out most of the day. Got back to find some plug plants I'd forgotten I'd ordered! Lobelia queen victoria and some hardy fuschia, hawkshead.
Then watered some pots and edged the grass

Planted out the sweetcorn, squashes and courgettes. Cut down a load of rubbish growing in the scrub behind my garden, nettles, bindweed, oldmans beard and brambles. The sloes and damsons are looking good at the moment. Planted out a lily, a dwarf rhododendron and Salvia stolonifera.
                    Then watered.

Down to the polytunnel at 6am to water. and hunt cucumbers...before it got too hot. Then made the most of the lack of wind to weedkill the borders of the plot and a few stray bits of couch grass and bindweed that just didn't want to give up :) I'll win  Hoed a couple of borders, but by 1pm it was 31C so gave up and headed for the pool....:phew: Watered the terrace pots this evening. I'm keeping a close eye on them since they were dosed with my home-made Miracle-Gro. So far, so good :)

Yep. I had an interesting couple of hours in the droguerie in Agen, buying little brown paper packets of phosphate of this and sulphate of that and the other  Had to improvise on the basic nitrogen and potassium, and the sulphate of iron isn't very soluble, but on the whole it worked OK. At least, it didn't explode, fizz or melt anything :roflol: It's strong, though, so a little will go a long way! Just need to figure out how to stop the cats drinking out of the 'dosed' watering cans, now. If you read of sightings of huge sabre-toothed tigers in SW France, that'll be them

Cut the grass, tied Toms up (they had a rough start of life with us being away the first half of May- they survived but started to perform just now) and Made Plans.

I want to raise the water level of my little pond so considered various wall systems and googled preformed ones. I think my Plan of a chicken wire structure to form the edges and the bird paddling area is perfect, what could possibly go wrong? :heehee:

We have people coming to buy plants today. If they buy a lot they will be here for a fair amount of time so we shall end up sitting and chatting over a cuppa. That happened twice yesterday but we had a pleasant time and got over £100 for the charity. I usually end up digging plants out for them as they always seem to want things that have not been potted up. That may not be possible today as the ground is rock hard. I have the sprinkler going and shall move it around the beds.

We have more potting up of patio pots but I'm rapidly running out of compost. I ended up using 280 litres yesterday. I can't get any more today as the nursery that I buy from doesn't open on Sundays but have a couple of bags left.
