I did a soil test (not in the area that seems to give trouble) and the soil seems to be strongly acidic. I believe that can happen with clay soil. I have got myself a bottle of distilled water so I will test the suspect bit over the next couple of days.
Today I brought the hose out and gave the entire garden another good soaking before the next couple of days' forecast heatwave.

I've been out and about in the garden today. Give the plants a drink this morning.

Pruned back a sambucus and the wisteria. Dead headed tge roses, tied in a new frame work for Malvern Hills to scramble over the shed. Planted out a few plants and sowed done seeds. Mowed the lawn and probably some over bits I've forgotten by now

Most of the time recently is being spent trying to help the plants survive. I've lost count of how long it has been since we had proper rain but it is closer to three months than to two.

The ground is too hard to dig so I just pull the nasty weeds that seem to love this weather.

Most time is spent watering. Veggies get watered regularly, by sprinkler, and so do some of the flower beds but the drought is beating us in some parts of the garden and we are losing quite a lot of plants and shrubs and some trees are suffering badly.

Beds are cracking up (so am I :old: :heehee:)

We are forecast a 17% chance of rain on Wednesday :fingers crossed:

I went out at 08:00 (20°C) and watered my hanging baskets and pouches. I will do the same about 12 hours later.
I potted up some more Hemp Agrimony and the remainder in the seed tray I tipped out on my spoil heap/wildflower sanctuary. The potting shed was becoming unbearably hot so it was beer time by then.

Walked outside, paused, walked back in. Not my sort of gardening weather!

As soon as the direct sun was off the hanging baskets and flower pouches I gave them another water and I will go round them again later this evening.

Soaked all the pots on the terrace at 6h30 but they'll need doing again this evening. Crazy temperatures and a searing, hot, southerly wind all day. Watered in the polytunnel too. Apart from that, gardening is reduced to moving hosepipes around the garden to keep the borders watered in rotation and occasionally taking the hedgetrimmer to over-enthusiastic evergreen shrubs.
On the bright side, even the weeds are shrivelling up and dying

Over the weekend pruned out the finished raspberry canes and a couple of other things, stacked for shredding. Planted some sunflowers out, repotted Eucomis and Puya mirabalis also a couple of cacti.
Cleared some pots of things that have died and moved small dahlias, and other potted plants not flowering onto a patch of gravel. Watered a lot of things, potted up some spring flowering bulbs and sowed some seed they had produced, watered some more. Weeded, noted the hot weather has finished off the weeds growing in the gravel path; one job I don't have to do now. Watered some more.

I've done my two hours of gardening for the day (another hour to go watering this evening). The morning hour of watering of everything not in the ground, some deadheading and some repotting. The tomato plants are now growing very quickly so I had better check to see whether they need tying in.

Just checked the thermometer (and internet) and it has just hit 29C.

Got the hose out first thing this morning, while it was overcast, and gave the ground a good soaking. Then when I started to wind the hose back in the rain started. I wish I had a £1 for every time that has happened to me since moving in here.
