Apart from the regular bean picking, windfall picking up (one or two buckets a day), and the pruning and cutting back, I have been cutting some of the lawns.

This one has greened up quite well as it gets a fair amount of morning dew
          P1550520.JPG

This one is a bit more patchy and has the old ants' nest in it.
          P1550550.JPG

It's the nest that I mow around carefully as they have been here longer than me and deserve respect. I've only been here 50 years.
          P1550549.JPG

It took me four cuts to get the wild area cut back as it was knee height. I had to clear the windfalls first but also the badly damaged ones that I leave for the wasps and other insects.
          P1550523.JPG

Those I chucked over the fence into the edge of the field - four piles like this
          P1550533.JPG

The wasps have lived in this hole, under a plum tree, for over 50 years
          P1550536.JPG

Before cutting the wild area back I had to chop out tree roots that were sticking up about 4" above the ground. A job that needs doing every few years.
          P1550524.JPG

Apples have been cropping exceptionally well this year
          P1550525.JPG

          P1550527.JPG

We've also been cutting back some of the dead trees and shrubs that the drought got to. The smaller parts were put in the green waste and the bigger ones on the bonfire. Still some more to go.
          P1550528.JPG

We still haven't had much rain, just the heavy downpour the other week and a small amount of rain one other day. So the ground is still cracking up

We've been trying to dig and weed in the hard ground and I have started spreading compost.
            P1550538.JPG

With plenty more to go :phew:
            P1550544.JPG

            P1550545.JPG

I found it hard work chucking the top of one compost heap onto the one next to it to get to the good compost
            P1550529.JPG

Then putting the grass cuttings on top
            P1550530.JPG

We have five of these heaps. This one just needs skimming
            P1550531.JPG

and this one needs a lot more chucked onto another heap before using what is under it. This is 4ft deep.
            P1550532.JPG

All this digging is getting a bit much for me so I have some help with it.

I started using the step ladder for getting some of the fruit higher up but had a little accident
Caught my shins on the second step - not very polite words uttered!

Took delivery of and planted two Dianthus "Memories", one each beside Mum and Dad's trees in the Meadow. There is a plaque to each under their respective tree.
When we lost our lovely cat Lucy we buried her under our free-standing pond and there is a brass plaque on the slab. If someone digs up her remains when we are gone, they will worryingly think we have buried Mum and Dad down the Meadow!

Nothing in the balcony today but yesterday I spent at least 3 hours making changes. The first 2 hours in the morning were spent putting up a big round white table that has been taken down since May & putting up the plastic mini-greenhouse on it. It always sits in the most sheltered corner of the balcony & it's where I keep my Geraniums & Pelargoniums as well as my Fuchsias during the winter.

                  .
This photo is before I finished it. I put a plastic bag from a mattress over the greenhouse so that it makes a 2nd cover & will give a little extra protection if the winter is very cold. Though it won't be much use if we have another winter like we had in 2010!

In the afternoon I cut a door in the plastic bag & adjusted it for a better fit. Then I rolled up the door & fixed it on the top. I've since put some of my smaller Geraniums inside that I want to keep. Also at least one Fuchsia plant for the moment. I have more to put in it but that will be in a few weeks. I've also put two seedtrays with small pots containing cutting of Geraniums & Fuchsias in there as well.

Started my Winter Windowsill by potting the struggling outdoors mini Chillies together and arranging grow lights to create a "fabulous winter grow zone right on your windowsill", or whatever they call it in one of those magazines.

I'm not going to call the journalists in just yet but the idea sort of works and is worth playing with I think. Once the Chillies have been eaten, herbs can step in. And surely the dwarf beans (10p seeds from wilkos) will give a bountiful harvest all winter, if not for us at least for the aphids.

                          Who's an optimist? :heehee:

Anyways, it's actually nice to have a spot of light just there where most of the chopping and food preparation takes place. Feels cosy, and the timer function of the lights tells me when it's bedtime.
