WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Yes @JJ28 they got blackened by a sharp frost. I moved them undercover ( still outdoors) for a week to dry out a bit. Then I trimmed them hard back and moved them into the bubble wrap enclosure inside our greenhouse.

 

Thank you Upsydaisy....still waiting for a frost here, then I think the unheated conservatory should suit them. I have a pot of begonias also, not had before. Do they keep over winter in cool indoors please?

 

brought some plants in the house for now , forgot about the ensete in the gh last night hope it hasn't damaged it. Tidied the spare room so I could fit said plants in there.

 

Today our gardener came in and trimmed the hedge for us. It was a lovely dry sunny day, though freezing cold, and he had it done and tidied up in five hours.

 

As I haven't set a foot on the balcony today, due to accompanying my wife to the Eye Clinic at the local hospital. She had the stitches taken out & given some more eye drops which I will have to put in her eye for the next 4 weeks, I don't know how my plants have fared. I don't expect to see any casualties but I will have to bring a couple of things into the flat over night & put them out again sometime tomorrow.

Before we go to bed tonight I will close up the mini-greenhouse on the table on the balcony & bring in two pots of Clivias. They need a cold spell but not getting frosted! Other than that there is little else I can do for the moment. But even a couple of degrees of frost won't kill off my Geraniums & Pelargoniums on the balcony. I've tried to give them a modicum of protection so I'm not expecting any plants to be killed by the frosts of tonight & the coming few days. But there are some seedling Nasturtiums that will no doubt succumb tonight. These are self-sown but I have seeds saved to plant next year.

 

Sorry @JJ28 , can't help you with Begonias as I don't grow them, I'm sure someone in ' the know' will come to your aid soon.

 

It depends what sort they are. Tuberous ones will keep if dry and cool, and B. semperflorens usually keep in the same conditions. I cut all the dying stems off.

Other Begonias are usually tender so would be best brought indoors.

 

After hanging out the laundry ( after a careful bonfire check ) I must sweep the pathway and main door patio area of leaves as mushy ones can get slippery in icy temps and I would hate our postie to come a cropper!!

 

Does your postie come to your door Upsy? You take care on that slippery surface too!

Thank you for advice Michael Hewett, it's now in the conservatory. I'd like it to survive as it was absolutely covered in beautiful white flowers throughout the summer.

 

Nothing today it's too cold.

Vicky ,the postman was saved from negotiating the risky journey to our mailbox....I met him at the gate whilst in mid sweeping mode.
