WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Obviously we don't have post today as it is a National Holiday. Being as our box is in the unit in the Parish Offices, we also don't have post on Saturdays or Sundays.

I am certainly not doing anything in the garden. Actually, there is nothing to do anyway as nearly everything is evergreen/self cleaning.

 

I think the trees here are almost finished shedding their leaves now Vicky. Having said that I did notice a couple of them stubbornly holding on to theirs still. It's been so calm here lately ( mustn't jinx things ) that some leaves have been able to cling on.

 

Dammit, -2c overnight.....will have to get the rest of my tenders in

 

Can't do anything the ground is frozen.

 

I'm definitely not in digging mode Ours is frozen solid too!!

 

There's nothing else i can do out there, but got other things to do inside.

 

I'm sorry to know your ground is frozen @Upsydaisy and @Logan, for me that's about the worst weather you can get, the very cold temperature makes me feel ill.
We don't have it that cold here though (and I am grateful !) and the ice in some containers down the garden has melted,
but I haven't been doing anything outside ... I've been moving some Aeoniums from the top shelves of my greenhouse (which are just under the roof), and squashing them in between the cacti on the lower shelves, just in case they get frosted if it turns exceptionally cold.
I do believe the twinwall polycarbonate roof provides some insulation though, because the condensation hasn't frozen even on the few frosty mornings we've had.

I also brought a trough of Begonia semperflorens into the house and cut the dead stems off. I had forgotten about it in the front garden and the frost has got at it. I hope I've saved them.

 

Had a look round outside and the Impatiens and Dahlia imperialis are mush. I moved a number of pots into the greenhouse that I had left out a few days too long we'll see how it goes with them.

 

I've moved a couple of large pots containing gingers into the garage, didn't notice at first but the soil was solid.
I was hoping to leave my Leucospermum outside all winter but that pot was solid as well, hope it thaws out ok.

 

We had a fox in our garden this evening. The first time we have seen one. My wife happened to be in the darkened kitchen when the security light came on and there it was.

 

I've brought a Coprosma, a Trachelospermum asiaticum, a Myrtus, some Begonia semperflorens, and a Loropetalum all into my utility room. I can't carry them down the garden to the perspex shelter these days, and they are frozen solid. I have to dodge around them to get to the freezer and microwave

 

1000 hrs this morning 0.5°C in greenhouse, watering can iced over, condensation frozen on the glass. At 1200 hrs it was 5.5°C and the condensation had thawed out. The plants, on the shelving, have shuffled away from the glass and the ones on the floor have huddled together in the centre.
As for what I've been doing working on removing excess Iris foetidissima, moving some of the chippings and stump grindings into a heap, mixing with the pile of partially rotted pine needles and green stuff cleared from where the trees were. At one end I've finally found the original ground. Hopefully the heap will rot down over the next 18 months or so.
