WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

That's all I'm doing at the moment too Jocko.

 

Above freezing today, will make an excursion to the greenhouse and see what's happening in there, tidy up, water a little if necessary, some plants will have defoliated over the cold spell and with these it will be stand to one side, keep dry and hope for swelling buds in spring.
If knee feels like it may clear some of the dead top growth off some of the tender perennials like the impatiens, salvias and Dahlia imperalis.

 

It's finally above 0C so I have poured a kettleful on the path and on the pond. That counts as gardening for today.

 

Outside all the plants with tender foliage are compost, but they should come from the roots next spring. Colquhounia coccinea looking sad, as are most of the salvias barring S microphylla and S greggii.
In the greenhouse the temperature since last Saturday were max 13.5° and -3 °C according to the thermometer laid on the bench. All the succulents appear to be alright as does the Carmichaelia and the Cantua. The dahlias have lost all their top growth apart from D tenuicaulis, Salvia corrugata, S miniata and Amistad still have flower buds, S gesneriiflora and S "Purple Majesty" aren't too bad, but S darcyii is looking rather sorry for itself. Most other things aren't too bad.

 

I don't know why but @shiney when you mention how the birds are with both you and Mrs. S, I think of the scene in Cinderella where they are helping her create a beautiful dress!

I've only checked the bird feeder and it is still fairly full. I have moved some things from the cellar back into the greenhouses because, well, why not. It is not stuff that is going to be ruined by being frozen.

And one of these days, we'll get cold weather just like you have at the moment..

 

Nothing today it's been too cold, but by Monday i might be able to finish emptying the compost bin.

 

I need to know what to do in the "garden" this week. My problem? Someone gave me a couple of lovely little geraniums which were originally cuttings from their at least 70 year old plant. They were in small pots but had outgrown those quickly and so I potted them into bigger pots before bringing them down to the cellar and under LED lights. They are growing at an alarming rate and I don't know what to do. Should I be trimming them back or keep potting them up? I'm worried that space will be an issue down there in the next few months when I start my other seeds.

Should I trim and keep them in place or do I pot up and move them near a window upstairs after the solstice?

Oh, and today I have started preparing small pots for any kelsae onion seeds that germinate. The seeds will arrive to me, hopefully before boxing day.

 

Canadian Lori, I'd trim them back and take them out of the grow light and keep them frost free, i keep mine on the dry side and on a windowsill, it can be sunny or not.

Today I took the geraniums out from under the lights and gave them a big trim @Logan

I couldn't bear throwing out all of the trimmings so now have 7 cuttings dipped in rooting hormone and in little pots.

 

I recognise the parakeet @shiney, it's a Canary Wing.

 

You won't catch me handling a big fat hairy spider anytime soon!

 

I was able to get out on the balcony today for about 15 minutes, first time I have been out for so long in more than a week! I didn't do any "gardening" as such just swept away a few days accumulation of pigeon dropping!II also took photos of the frosted plants .
