WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Looking good G and I love those planters.

 

Not much today it more a less rained two days solid with a howling wind . I have been cleaning the propagator out infestation of gnat flies they are a pain in the ass , got the sticky tape trap out .

I am looking at dahlia now pray for me or more like my wallet

 

Spent a few weekends cutting down a row of seven conifers that blocked off the bottom right corner of the garden (where the previous owner had been dumping their garden waste for years). We cleared the conifers 10 foot trunks of branches and made a wood pile of them for insects. All the conifer branches are piled up in the corner and we are gradually chopping them up and taking them to the dump (2 trips yesterday), but while out with the first load a 50 foot tree from the field behind us came crashing down in to the garden, only just missed out crab apple tree!

Now hubs is looking for recommendations for a battery powered chain saw (yeah, any excuse!). When we moved here in the autumn, as we were clearing that end (the first time) we unearthed a fallen tree from the field, guess we best not go with our plan of having a garden room built down that end then.

The tree trunk is so thick we can easily store it for burning in the open fire next winter, just need the chain saw and maybe a shredder. Recommendations for a shredder too please?

Anyone else suffered from yesterday’s windy weather?

 

Gosh @Tinkerbelle61 !! , so glad that you both are safe and escaped injury!

 

Way behind on everything with life stuff handling in the past few weeks, and the morning feed of the robin and blackbird just now, only serves to confirm it’s too damn cold to do anything owt.

So it’s a seed day today, and the battle for the window sill real estate starts in earnest. Seed compost in and getting to room temp, breakfast bar cleared, cleaned negative Covid swab ready(far better than cotton buds for those near invisible seeds), brush and shovel, and recharged Dyson, on standby for the clean up afterwards. Sorted. Kettle, coffee, and away we go.

It’s that threshold day Upsy, the day when the house becomes an extension of the garden for a couple of months….and try to block off impending energy price rises for the sake of adequate room temps and the greater good!!

 

Like the Covid swab suggestion too...brilliant!

 

Thanks @Loofah but this is a big tree, the trunk is about 12” diameter, hubs is looking at one with a 14” blade. Says he can get next day delivery! There’s no stopping him now!!!

 

Awww thank you @Upsydaisy Im just glad we were out when it came down as we would have been down that end cutting up the conifer branches, scary if I think about it.

 

I made 56 soil blocks this morning and planted one half with delphinium seeds and the other with sweet pea seeds. According to the packet, it takes 3 weeks for the delphinium to germinate and I have found the same with sweet peas so I thought I'd start them in tandem.

 

We are new to the village and don’t want to cause any issues or be seen to be complaining (sometimes when you’re new, even saying something nicely can cause offence I find). It looks like another one that was beside the one that fell into our garden, is now leaning on our neighbours gym room at the end of their garden. They have been here since the houses were built in the 80’s and knows the farmer so we are going to leave it to him to start the dialogue when he notices the tree.

Thanks for the advice @shiney it may still all work out in our favour (and hubs gets a new toy out of it whatever the outcome, joy!).
