Just been drying out the fleece balls so the treeferns are ready for any incoming freezing snow in the next few days.

I did another three hours on the edges and first 2ft of bed on the far side of that larger lawn. :phew:

Three robins helped me as they took out the livestock whilst I was removing weeds.

An inconvenient place to grow but glad to hear you're taking care of it.

Some years back the bee orchids were spreading throughout that lawn and we made the decision to send them to a new home as I couldn't cut the lawn and we needed that lawn to look good when we opened the garden each year. I took advice on transplanting them and needed to remove a reasonable amount of lawn with each orchid as they require a certain soil fungus to help them grow. This fungus is killed if chemicals are used on the lawn. That went to a friends garden and thrived there. It looks as though they may now be coming back to that lawn.

We have a lot of them at the other end of the back garden, over 300ft away, and those are in what has been our 'wild area', amongst the fruit trees, for many years. That grass doesn't get cut from March through to the end of August - except for a few single mower width paths so as to walk through OK. Last year we had seven pyramidal orchids turn up in that area as well. :dbgrtmb:

Four months into our new home and OH put up the wooden greenhouse and started on the aluminium one. Won’t have the base and glass in the aluminium one for another month, but it’s a good start.

                EDB4A38B-B49C-440E-B0D6-5129F2C08CC2.jpeg

He also put the three vegtrugs in position. Will have to wait for end of month payday to order the liners for two of them and a frame and winter & summer covers for one.

                9E8A57B6-B85E-448C-9367-63AF8FBF3AD8.jpeg

Then have a tonne bag of compost delivered to fill them with.

Looking on line, as it will be for the vegtrugs only, is it worth getting compost or is topsoil okay? I usually add FBB to the trugs before sowing and also top up with MPC each time I harvest veg, and throw in slow release fertiliser a few times in the spring/summer. I can only find peat free compost online so would have to mix it with something I guess, I don’t get much time in the week to garden as working full time still and have a longer commute now we have moved, so wouldn’t want peat free to dry out.

All advice gratefully received and happy new year to y’all.

                Tink

You can buy a mix of soil and compost which would save effort but it is more expensive. Any topsoil I've bought tends to compact quite hard if you don't add anything to it.

We have cut off all the leaves on the two larger Epimediums. The largest one is about 6ft diameter and we shall need to dig some up in order to keep it under control. The yellow flowering one is more vigorous than the other colours.

We've also started on the Hellebores :phew:

Have been busy over Christmas, when weather allowed: was mostly OK. Laid flagstones and gravel in the greenhouse; removed 2 of 3 raised beds (3rd is now ready to go); moved the herb plants from raised bed 3 to new home; and then yesterday dug over for potatoes to go in where the raised beds were. Need to add compost (have a tonne of local green waste compost - has to be used lightly - ready to go) - and plant. Tray of Jersey Royals ready to go.

And then I've started planting up tomato and chilli seeds; onions, coriander, dill coming on nicely.

And wondering about where I can find an electrician to put an electric supply into the greenhouse... All good!

I take cuttings any time I remember! My Monty D book says to take Penstamon cuttings in the summer. I took some a week ago. We shall see...

Cut the old leaves off some more hellebores, filled 3 bags with them and put them round the side of the house by the wheely bin. It was so cold that I put on 2 pairs of old trousers and a thick fleece jacket.
