WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Clear up today, lost a tree (or shrub), can anyone identify this please? It had lovely little purple/blue flowers on it in summer and most of winter.





I’ve taken some cuttings in my amateur way, some in compost with rooting powder and some in water, have left them in the greenhouse with my fingers crossed.




Do I have a chance or am I wasting my time (and greenhouse space)?

Think it was on its way out anyway, by the look of where is broke.

Nearly fixed the damage after the storms, so nearly repaired the broken obelisk. Nearly trimmed the roses to get to the obelisk. Almost gathered strength to fix the fallen bird feeder. Planned to re-seed disappointing herbs. Considered clearing storm debris from the pond.

But hey, tomorrow's another day, I'll give things another shot.

 

That's a shame @Tinkerbelle61 I don't know what it is but you can only try the cuttings, they might take or not.

 

@Tinkerbelle61 I would suggest a clear plastic bag, or, depending on the pot size , the bottom half of a clear plastic bottle to cover the cuttings in the soil.
I personally haven't had any luck trying to root shrub cuttings in water, I tend to use that method for softer stemmed plants.

Spent the whole day, apart from a couple of hours around midday to eat and escape the worse of yet more wind and rain, clearing up and mending after the storm yesterday...all is now in order and broken bits are either mended or temporarily fixed until our builder friend can pop by .

But going by our awful forecast, we're in for a solid 25 hour block of winds 40+ mph from lunchtime tomorrow until lunchtime on Monday...this will probably give us more to clear up and fix!!

 

Getting 10 hours of daylight now so sowing of frost hardy veggies were done today. One tray of lettuce to be pricked out, one tray of brassicas, lots of multi sown herbs and veg like dill, coriander, parsley, loads of onions and shallots, florence fennel, peas for shoots, spinach and a few others I forget

 

Like electric cars @shiney. The price will have to drop quite a bit before I and many others consider paying out for it.

It must be rebranded then @JWK. More often than not Verve had fungus gnats.

@Upsydaisy have you tried taking 'cuttings' with a heel attached? I find they take better in water.

 

Hi all I hope everyone in the UK is okay after the storm and not too much damage to their gardens x

Today I recieved some plants I'd forgotten I ordered I love when that happens lol

I planted some tickseeds, (purportedly) perennial evening primroses and a couple of hardy amarylis. I relocated a dwarf monarda and two dahliettas, which I was astonished to find I may not have managed to kill over winter (jury's still out on the chocolate cosmos but I'm not holding my breath). I now have 25 daffodil bulbs to find homes for as well as seven cactus dahlias (apparently I got them for free with my orders - result!)

My war with the squirrel is still ongoing. I'm now trying a new humane spray called "Hot Nuts" which is supposed to deter them. I can confirm it certainly works on humans who are stupid enough to spray it into the wind - that stuff really burns the eyes! - fingers crossed it's effective on squirrels too

 

Thanks @Upsydaisy I actually did put a plastic bag over the ones in compost just after taking the photo as an after thought, it must have been somewhere at the back of my mind, probably from reading through GC posts. I’ll not bother with the ones in water, was just hedging my bets really

Nothing today it's raining

 

The CEO had me out giving her a hand to put Growmore fertiliser under the hedge. All 10Kgs so we are hoping for rain.

 

I had brought a pot of miniature daffodils indoors late on Thursday due to the predicted Friday storm, and then put it outside again on Saturday thinking it would be ok, but within a couple of hours the wind and rain was bowing the stems so I brought it back inside again. I didn't think it would completely recover, but today I found all its stems completely upright again. It had managed to upright its stems all by itself. Wind and rain is still predicted for today, so maybe I will keep it inside for another day or two. This is one I want by the door outside where we sit.

The other miniature daffodils growing in various places in the garden are still upright, they haven't been blown over by the storm at all. Incredibly tough little flowers.

 

Blimey! I hope it's not a Leylandii hedge, we'll never see you again

 

It is just a box hedge with some cotoneaster through it.
