WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

If looking to buy bulk delivered, then best to look for someone local. Most online stores that sell bulk bags will offer a nation wide service with others delivering with in a certain radius. The further away the supplier the more it will of cost for the transport.

Also check what the volume of the bulk bag is, some online traders say their bulk bags are approximately 600 litres, yet I have seen some that have as much as 1200 litres. The bigger bag might cost more to purchase but it works out cheaper per litre.

Also check, facebook, gumtree and your local paper. People advertise top soil for free, otherwise they have to pay to get it removed, you will have to take a shovel and some empty bags though.

 

Spent the whole afternoon in the garden, clearing leaves that had been blown into a number of areas by the wind and had built up considerably.

Finished trimming off the old leaves on all the remaining Hellebores ,they're all on the verge of blooming. The Christmas Rose ones have been in bloom for some time now.

Started cutting back the Hardy Fuchsias and Hypericums.

The days are definitely getting longer, I didn't come in until almost 5pm.

The wind was quite strong and very cold and I couldn't feel my fingers. During the winter months I always wear two pairs of trousers in the garden @Logan ....my joints would never cope otherwise.

Added more fleece to the over wintering plants in the cold frames and greenhouse.

I got out early this morning and managed to to mow the lawn. A friend kindly allowed me to use thier push mower as it sails through damp grass Swept the dead leaves up in the back patio then had a nosey around the very bald looking borders and decided to make them even more sparse by getting my secateurs out

 

No chance of mowing here Jasmine....or anything else outside apart from feeding the birds.

Today I took delivery of a new cold frame and a cheap pine coffee table to mount it on (just for a bit extra height as I cannot get down to ground level).
We also received an Edgeworthia chrysantha 'Nanjing Gold' Paperbush which we planted out, though I think it may be too big for the space we chose, once mature.

 

I managed to get to the allotment this morning for the first time in ages. It was lovely and sunny but cold. Popped to the local GC on the way home then sown some Eryngium "silver ghost" after a complete failure sowing them outdoors last spring I'm trying indoors this year.

I only sowed the new chillie pepper seeds. One of the soil blocks I was going to use, sprouted something already. I have no idea what it is and time will tell. Sometimes when recycling potting soil, I get pleasant surprises

 

Not been in the garden today but have been going through the super list of slug/snail proof plants @Perki kindly gave me last year and I've decided to concentrate on adding some Roses this year. I know nothing about them so going to be doing a lot of reading

 

That's great then and glad that you're doing ok. I decided not to do anything outside, we had a frost last night and everything is wet and cold. So thought that i would be a bit lazy and wait until next Monday it should be a bit warmer and hubby won't be around to keep a eye on me.

 

Yes same here we had a hard frost too. Very clear skies and sunny first thing but the ground is too solid to attempt anything.

The sun has gone and it's still very cold and damp but I have cleared more pathways and two of our patios from leaves that have recently be blown onto them.

 

Our ground is frozen solid. So far only about 4 inches down. Obviously no outside gardening will be going on and the timing is not right to sow any more seeds so my "gardening" today will be limited to three hole punching my seed catalogues to put them in the seed binder.

Oh and I did also run down to the cellar to look at the soil blocks with chillie seeds to see if anything had sprouted yet. As usual there are no early risers.

 

Nothing today but I did cleaned all my plant labels last night, washed out my sowing pots the day before. Ordered the last of my seeds last night , some seeds turned up the other day and I am expecting some today / tomorrow . Hopefully I'll start sowing some seeds this weekend its to cold today handling little tiny seeds . Carry 2 little bags of seed & cutting back from town Wednesday evening, never again the pain in my hands from lack of circulation and the freezing temperatures ( forgot my gloves ) , would of only got one bag if it wasn't on offer 2 for £5 wasn't when I got to the till though
