WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY - 2022

Cut back more of the Wallflowers..I don't like the look of them once start to fade.
D+D'd ( dug and ditched) two huge clumps of leafy plants with blue flowers...no idea what they are but they are thugs..probably weeds!!!
Staked the Delphiniums.
Off out for the afternoon now.

 

Made a start to working on "The Meadow". We then made up a hanging basket. We did some watering and I did a bit of liquid feeding. Started a couple of Pelargonium cuttings but with little belief in them growing and not rotting.

 

Just opened the sweet peas, nice root system, think I need to pass them on so they can go into the ground or a container have too many for myself. New foxglove is flowering I think it's a "white Dalmatian" looks nice.

 

Potted up some recently delivered dahlia cuttings, from Gilberts Nursery, very pleased with the them; I ordered them early autumn.
Also potted up some tomato plants and a couple of dahlias that are being rehomed next week.

 

Tied in my sweet peas, dug out a previously overlooked sycamore sapling, wondered about what to grow in some 3" ceramic pots. ....tagetes????

 

Too cold for gardening today. I misted my plants in the potting shed and we made plans for the first pleasant day. Took delivery of a load of compost and three very healthy Digitalis Illumination Cherry Brandy jumbo plugs.

 

Cutting back Wallflowers yet again. Prepared the border for planting out that is home to the in situ Dahlias...pleased to report that once again they have all survived the Winter elements and are shooting up really quickly , I took some new shoots ( with attached tuber) from 3 of them.
Drastically cut back some Carnations that are trying hard to dominate the border.
Took out the branches from 2 shrubs that had reverted.
Finally planted out the 3 Urns with Salvia Blaze of Fire, Laurentia Blue Stars and Cineraria Silver Dust and Gypsophilia.
Watered all the pots and trays.
Fed the Thornless BlackBerry .

 

My favorite flower. How long do they bloom there? I have had them go for months here. Obviously not the florist version.

 

A couple of months ....on and off if I remember to water them! I like them but have got rid of quite a few that had grown very large and were sprawling over all the other plants.

 

Watered the blueberries and beetroot seedlings, also did a bit of pruning of the currant bushes.

 

It's been snowing Dandelion seeds here for days, they've been coming down in drifts from all the fields behind my house (and all the un-looked-after gardens)
There was a layer of them covering my cacti and the only way I could get them off was by using a vacuum cleaner
I also vacuumed two cold frames and the perspex shelter at the north side of my garage (the one on the south side is more sheltered so no Dandelion seeds get in there)

 

Finished most of my Butterfly Border yesterday! Looks a tad messy ATM but will tidy it up and plant oregano along the edge before the end of the month.

We had some hours of light showers on & off most of the day yesterday so I couldn't get out onto the balcony, except late evening when I took a few photos using the Macro function on my new mobile phone.

Today I went out & watered practically all the plants on the balcony, even the ones on or up against the balcony railings. The rain had done no more than clean the dust of the leaves leaving me the business of watering them properly!

While I was doing the watering I thought I ought to move the Geranium cutting, I potted up a few weeks ago & put in the mini-greenhouse, out of it so they can harden off ready to go into their summer flowering positions at the end of the month.

I needed to put them as far back from the railings as possible so they don't get burnt by the sun. The majority are in small pots for a couple of more weeks but they should do fine.

I have lots of Geranium & Pelargonium cutting I need to pot up soon but I ran out of small pots (3") but fortunately my son came to my rescue & brought me round a few . So from Monday, if the weather cooperates, I hope to start moving them into these pots.
