WHAT ARE WE DOING IN THE GARDEN TODAY 2023

,I do start out well Lori, but once the planting out really gets underway I get too busy to stop and wash as I go....and I literally have 100s.
On the plus side they do dry out well and I just give them a quick brush before they go in the tub of hot water. They get sterilized before use next year as well.
Do you pre -fill yours with compost now ready for seed sowing next year Lori??

I do that as well @shiney ...I distribute our Ladybird population evenly around our garden...this year is a very good year, our Mock Orange is our Ladybird nursery, it it's smothered with them in various growth stages.

 

Lori even our laundry gets covered with them . I have to shake and check everything as I remove items from the washing line!!!

 

We get so many that very occasionally, maybe once a decade or so, they actually make mainstream news for causing problems. There have been claims of ladybirds in such huge numbers that they can't find enough food, get hungry, and bite people, although the latter point, about biting people, I take with a large pinch of salt. I'm not even sure ladybirds are even capable of biting people.

As a ladybird related aside, sometimes ladybirds coming into conflict with ants. An old gardener I used to know once told me that ants farm greenfly much like humans farm cattle. He said the ants herd the greenfly and then protect them because they like their sugary poo. I thought he was pulling my leg. Then one day while tending to my plants, I saw a group of green flies, surrounded by ants but the ants weren't eating them. A ladybird came along, and the ants actively fended it off.

 

Pot washing, I never do that anymore.
I have a corner on the allotment where I "throw" my pots after use, they stay there all year and I just sort through them when I'm repotting.
The smaller pots go in the greenhouse, but again I rarely wash them anymore, I used to rigorously wash them all each winter with Jayes fluid but life is too short now.

 

Yes, I refill them with new compost before stowing them down in the cellar. I have roughly 200 of the little ones, 40 of the medium and only a couple of the one gallon seedling pots. I also refill the 2 gallon pots that hold the chillies after harvesting and just before the winter. I hate the thoughts of scrambling around looking for compost in early spring.

I've done givingthe chillies another blast off and have decided that the day will not end until I have planted in the last of my perrenials that I got cheap.

 

I don't wash pots, that are for purely outside use, I brush dirt away when dry and store in the shed. My washed lot are the ones that will be reused indoors for the next year's sowings or growing houseplants. And they end up very often on the dining table indoors for a couple of months. Prefer them nice and clean

 

Gave the Laurel hedge a good cut back. Blackbirds have all vacated the nests.
Used the electric hedgecutter instead of the old petrol one ive always used. Whata difference. Cut right back and no doubt will come back fighting again.

 

It was either have a shower or water the Runner Beans & Potatoes..... I just use more Deodorant

 

I don't clean pots and cell trays, they're fine for outside use and the conservatory.

Picked some blackcurrants before it started raining.

 

Potted on the rest of the polyanthus, got 126 plants all from collected seeds off the older ones, most of them will be yellow and the rest white.

 

Repotting a few orchids, had to buy a bag of orchid compost, what a rip off that stuff is.

Well not really a garden related job but......I am sitting outside doing it .

Giving my closed terrarium a bit of TLC....so at least it's based on plants

 

Started to pot on the wallflowers, done 18 of these so far with 2 plants in each. Yes and a lot more mess. I do all of this in the kitchen and sometimes the compost gets on the floor.
