What a weird weather day! Think we've had it all bar some snow.
I've tippped out another two planters and found a gooey mess of dahlias and canna. Went to sow some beetroot and discovered I didn't have any seed so searched in the shed and discovered no beetroot but did find seeds for parsley, ensete and washington palms. I doubt I'll get the ensete to germinate but will give it a shot.
    Ordered some beetroot seed...

Really sunny today so watered everything in the greenhouse, sowed a few more tomato seeds because 14 is just not enough, looked at my packets of sunflowers and chose the lucky 6 for this year ready to sow soon and checked dahlias for growth, bringing out the largest ones for some air on the lawn. Counted dahlias. 188 tubers in pots and another 21 small pots with bits from the tubers. Nearly all are shooting.

What a wonderful display you'll have in the summer when your Dahlias & Sunflowers burst into flower, @Dahlia Queen

I'm back to gardening after a few days spring cleaning! Today I spent an hour pricking out some Calendula seedling into some plug plant trays from the Pansies last autumn.

So here are a couple of before & after shots:

Hope so @Balc, I have cosmos, sweet peas, scabious, morning glory, calendula, Shasta daisy, delphiniums, zinnias and more sown in the greenhouse. Can’t stop sowing flowers to squeeze in borders and pots. Then there’s the wildflowers sown in my wild area too. Love sowing seeds! Your calendula look good, so organised and neat too.

Well, after a week of feeling sorry for myself being down with, supposedly, Covid and getting fed up I kicked myself into action. Still not sure it was Covid but didn't like it. Two days of positive tests, subsequent tests showed up neither positive or negative so we gave up testing. Very sore throat, bad cough, no other symptoms apart from losing half a stone - don't recommend it as a diet. It's the first time I can remember being properly ill for well over ten years. :noidea:

Two days ago I started in the garden with digging up plants to order - selling them for charity. There seems to be a run on Arum italicum at the moment and sold just over 100 of them. They're a lovely plant, look good in gardens, used a lot by flower arrangers (our main purchasers of them) and spread like mad in our garden. If I dug up another thousand it wouldn't notice.

I've also dug up lots of other plants that spread in the garden and shall be taking a car load of them to the charity garden centre today.

Yesterday I started to mow some of the lawns that had got out of hand in the last couple of weeks and spent three hours mowing. Some were ankle deep but not too much problem but one area was much longer (borders our wild garden) and I realised how long it had got when the neighbour's cat, Ollie, poked his head up out of it looking quite offended that I was going to disturb him. :heehee: I started humming to myself "The grass is as high as a pussy cat's eye" :roflol:

After that I did an hour of pressure washing as the patio is getting grubby, not really dirty, and should finish that in another few hours.

So back to normal but a bit weak :blue thumb:

Having bought some leek seed, some of these will be sown. Prick out some more peppers and tomatoes. Sow sweetcorn, runner and French beans, plant up germinated peas.
Check everything else in the greenhouse water as required.

Just taken down the plastic "fencing" I put round the pond in winter to deter herons.
There has been one around most days but I get fed up with the look of it so its had to go, I'll put some pots around the pond with leafy plants in for the summer but its still cold so I'm hoping for the best at the moment.
                      Shotgun at the ready.;)

We took our car load of plants to the charity garden centre then home for lunch and then I started more pressure washing. Wrong way round! The heavens opened whilst pressure washing and I was soaked before I could pack everything away.

Clothes are drying off and the sun has now come out :wallbanging:

Very little as it was pretty bitter outside. In between rain I had a couple of deliveries. Some bergenia 'cordifolia' plug plants which were massive which I've potted on and a really decent sized clematis Armandii (inspired by Eddy) to replace some jasmine killed off in the winter, which has been planted to cover a wall at the entrance to the courtyard.

                              Hi,

Just enjoying a mug of tea and lump of cherry cake before resuming hostilities.

What I'm doing now started last March when terrific wind damaged our huge crack willow tree which sure lived up to its name; fed up of tree work in dire weather conditions I took down the entire willow but also another 14 very tall trees and disposed of them enjoying myself working between sleet and sunshine with plenty of gusty wind.

The last couple of weeks I've been digging up eight of the stumps which were located in the middle of the garden intending to create a third wildflower meadow; as usual our Yorkshire weather dictates progress although a couple of days ago I was working in full waterproofs as the rain came down but eventually quit it being too dangerous trying to stand upright on the steep slope buffeted by the wind and tools slippery due to being wet.

                              12 March 2022_0008.JPG
The last tree to be felled it being over 65' tall. It sure opened up a lot of sky.

                              11 apl 2023_0001.JPG
Just two of the stumps so big I had to cut them up in order to move them but they were still very heavy and awkward; the middle of the garden looks like we've got giant moles as pets. 11 apl 2023_0007.JPG
Some of the stumps now behind the garden hut out of the way; I'll deal with these when or if the sun comes out. All done entirely on my own just enjoying a bit of light gardening. Last two stumps yet to get out then I can start on the many roots before digging over with spade.

Mug of tea finished and cake scoffed so I'd better get off my backside; one 20" petrol chainsaw serviced and chain sharpened yesterday the second 20" chainsaw I'll service today also lots of weeding to do in our front garden; I've been retired 22 years and still wonder what retirement should be like.

                              Kind regards, Colin.

Spotted some horrid ground elder in border full of tulips so will need to tiptoe through the tulips to dig it out. Not my favourite task! Then sowing my sunflowers and poppies which is a much nicer job. And it’s major muck out in chicken coop and their 3 joined runs which is preferable to the ground elder job!
