Weeding and planning/ finding spaces ready to start planting out...possibly next week.

Does anyone else find peat free compost dries out quickly and forms a dry crusty surface!!

I'm finding that some of the peat free just lets the water run straight through and out the bottom, I'm adding some JI, which makes it a bit more water holding.

I've been using Westland peat free compost with JI in it already. The top does dry out more but it holds moisture better. Do get small mushrooms grow on the surface sometimes but it's supposed to be beneficial and they die off quickly.

Just started this week using a peat free compost for the first time. I potted up a dozen Petunias in clay pots of the balcony railings. It will be interesting (I hope!) to see how they get on during the summer.

Not done a lot on the balcony really but I have cleared away the mountain of spent compost from under the table of the balcony. As we have had a fair bit of rain lately I hadn't been able to take it round to put on the church gardens. Today at last I was able to do so! :)

I got rid of the weeds you see on the path & today I used the spent compost as a mulch around the spring flowering bulbs & the Sweet Williams &the newly planted out Calendulas.

                  Hi,

I think after 36 years of extremely continuous hard work living here yesterday I finally broke clear.

                  11 apl 2023_0007.JPG
A few of the tree stumps and roots I dug out only a few weeks ago; the pile became bigger by the time I finished these from the middle area of the garden 8 huge stumps in total.
                  14 May 23_0001.JPG
Looking up from the middle; pictures just taken; it doesn't look too steep but it's like a mountainside making it difficult to stand upright.
                  14 May 23_0002.JPG
Here's the new middle meadow now with the wildflowers starting to grow; last year there were 8 very tall trees in this section.
                  14 May 23_0003.JPG
The left hand now more under control after rotavating; notice the fence angle; a job for superman but he wasn't available.
                  14 May 23_0004.JPG
The top meadow well on its way having broadcast the wildflower seeds about three weeks before broadcasting the middle meadow seeds. Not quite as steep but it soon drops away towards the valley bottom.

                  Rear garden_004 (2).JPG
How it used to look before I aged ten years getting rid of the lot.
                  Rear garden_003 (2).JPG
A closer look at the top corner there was also a huge hawthorn tree which is now history. It certainly wasn't a case of a bit of digging by spade then raking to create the meadows but now aged 75 it's time to back off a bit.

                  Kind regards, Colin.

4-6 inches or the centimetre equivalent..whatever that is. I just can't visualise in c's.

Likewise our compost has added JI in it too.

I attempted to cut my Grass, my 40+ year old Electric Mower has almost died, taken ages to do a small job.
I have ordered online a new one........Now I wonder if this will last as long as the old one did being that I won't be here in 40 years:old:

Took out all the Salad bits, and gave them a good watering

Lettuces, sown every couple of weeks, so different sizes.
