    that sounds scary dee,

i don't know what the difference is between scary & afraid. i am scared of the same things i'm afraid of.

i suppose it is like, if you're afraid of spiders, then you could have one in front of you and you would be scared. Or afraid, see i don;t know the difference.

i'm not afraid of insects - but i go mad if they're around, so maybe i am scared of them!? i think deep down, i'm scared, cos if they don't do any harm so what.

give us some advise you knowledgeable people.

    cheers

Hi, ag. There is a theory that we're genetically programmed to take substances that might be harmful to us but that also change the way we think (drugs, Alcohol )etc.
The theory is that as we've evolved and used them we have been able to think of solutions to problems in ways other than the solely logical. Therefore it has evolutionary advantages. Well, that's the theory.
Borrowers, I think you probably need someone like geoffhandley to answer that, 'im being an heducated guy. I suspect it comes from the way we use the language.
As a general rule I'd say that "afraid" is a general feeling of unease about something but "scared" is something that would make your heart race if you came upon it unexpectedly. Phobias are irrational fears. Then again, I'm well-known for talking through the top of my head
    :D

OED afraid = alarmed, frightened of something
scare = strike with terror or unreasoning terror.
So it seems like you are right. Afraid is when you have reasoned it out and probably have good reason to be frightened, scared is when you fill your pants cause something has suddenly happened. Apparently that is quite common when people are involved in road accidents, or so I am told.
At school years ago when I was a young and innocent, recently married teacher and newly arrived at my school we young men were afraid of a female member of staff who was a rampant nymphomaniac, to put in mildly. We were desperate not to be left alone, we would seek the company of kids to stay safe. She wasn't fussy, if it breathed it would do. One young colleague gave in. The following day he came in and the back of his jumper was covered in red wool - I found out later, but not personally, that she had a red wool fireside rug. [IMG]
The poor chap was a physical wreck. We were having to stick coffee down him before throwing him into teach.
Now if she had ambushed me in a stockroom I would have been scared, very scared indeed.

Thanks geoff, I knew you'd know the answer. [IMG] When I was at school, our Biology teacher scared us, until we were about 14, then we really appreciated her, especially on school trips :D :D :D

Geoff, only on school trips. Cracks me up, when you see on the News, all these "poor little boys being taken advantage of". They should be so lucky :D I presume I'm now going to get a load of stick about "corrupting minors" but as a 14yr old, in my generation, your mind was only on one thing. It wasn't verbs and adverbs or algebra, nor the difference between Northern and Western Europe. ( sorry, mate, just had to slip that in) :D
