I've had difficulty getting some varieties, like Oxford & Cambridge Blue, to make big plants in a season. Named varieties that I have bought / been given, and then propagated from cuttings, have done better. Best (tallest / bushiest) that I have grown from seed is Salvia coccinea (I think there is also a named variety "Lady in Red"). That came from SmartSeeds (USA on eBay)

I was thinking mainly of Salvia Splendens if nfrost is a beginner from seed . Its easy and a bedding plant favourite.
I have grown Salvia coccinea , for the last few years , and really like them. This year I am trying Salvia coccinea 'Summer Jewel Red' and pink.

@HarryS - toward the back are tree lillies, and there is also a couple of roses in there too (hiding in that photo), then its a row of dahlia 'Bishops Children', interspersed with salvia, then in front of those are African Marigolds, in front of those French Marigolds and petunia.

I actually ordered the Dahlia XXXL for last year, as I wanted a bit more height at the back of the borders, but there was some sort of foul up that meant they weren't sent, so I had to make do with African Marigolds to fill in the gaps.

Thankfully, I had a whole load more success than I expected growing stuff from seed, so I had plenty of stuff to fill the borders up - - in fact, I filled mine and some of my neighbours also :dbgrtmb:

I am fat controller, and I am a plantaholic.

Its getting serious now - I have just mullered nearly £130 on plants/bulbs/seeds! I'll post my list of shame in the 'what have you bought thread' after dinner.

I'm going to be really original and having a go with Gardeners Delight toms. Yes, I must be the only remaining person on the British Isle never to have grown them before ..

Got a long list of other things, but dependent on holiday plans.

Oh that reminds me! i am still running behind on the planting plans :wallbanging:... I have a stack of "inspiring designs", detailed excel sheet of each plant/seed I have with their respective properties, companion plants, sunlight requirements, pH etc :rolleyespink:etc.
Now One Day I have to put all this together and draw on a piece of paper what goes where. :dunno:.. Holidays are finished now and I dont know why I feel like I need some more holidays, days off work to sit and just do tht...

Minki, I've grown lots of different toms in the past and have quite a few lined up this year, but if you are new to tomato growing I think Gardeners Delight are generally a banker for taste and a good crop and easy to grow, so give them a go! ( .... famous last words ).

              You're not! I haven't grown Gardeners Delight either :)

Give some Maskotka a shot if you can - lovely wee tomatoes, very tasty, abundant fruit and all but bullet-proof plants (scruffy wee things, but the important bits are lovely - just like me! :sofa:)

Well whaddaya know, I bought some Bishops Children last week too! What colour! I've also got some (lots) of seeds for orange Pot Marigolds. Also two yellow roses in the border already, maybe this border thing isn't too hard afterall! I wanted to get Corn Marigold seeds from my garden but I don't think they ever produced very well, I might've been doing it wrong.
