No I said that the weather cannot be forecast with any sense of accuracy more than 10 days to a fortnight out. If it didn't read that way I apologise. To clarify my view: I think that what the met office predicts 5 days out is worth starting to plan for, and what it says for 48 hours out is almost a racing certainty, so I'll take physical actions that that point and wrap, or unwrap, plants accordingly. The basis for the Met Office's short term weather forecasting accuracy is that recent weather enables them to predict how the air masses will interact in the near future, and it is that particular, current, weather scenario and the highly likely relative air masses movements that I was attempting to describe.

Lets do that.

My reading of the Telegraph article was how grim the polar vortex has been in America. I don't think -40C/-40F is that rare in the region of the great lakes - so the houses there have garages where you can plug your car into the mains so that the oil in the sump doesn't freeze (or whatever). They certainly don't have those facilities in Texas! and the charts looked like the cold was stretching pretty much right down to the Gulf, so that will be a rare experience for anyone in the South, and life threatening as a consequence. It was interesting to read the thoughts of someone, unaccustomed to it, living through it. I didn't read in the article any predictions for us, so I don't think the Telegraph were trying to flog papers - that sort of sales-ramping by scare mongering is the domain of the Tabloids

 

Just heard the weather forecast on the radio more rain next week.

 

Just seen it on the BBCNews channel too.....more rain and it looks like more wind towards the end of next week if the closeness of the isobars on the weather map were anything to go by!

This is correct. Although their front is heading this way it will be very different by the time it lands.

Over the last week or so, three weathermen have said the same thing in interviews about the US weather.

 

I'm going to grow some Stevia this year. I haven't tried growing it before but it is great stuff so I'll have a go.
Btw, whatever happens to the weather we will all just go on gardening I am sure.

No but seriously, I'm going to plant a lot of dahlias in a sunny bed. I've only planted a few in my time, but I'd like to try different types this year.

 

I noticed wilkinsons had some differant kinds for a £1 a pack,not sure if its for 1 bulb as i didnt get time to browse but i will on tuesday

Thanks @fat controller, @Kristen, @Sheal and @lost_in_france... yes all i wanted to know, that they will be fine... and no I didnt plan for any specific dates/time... its just one day I am de-weeding the not-so-cold but wet garden and see all these green leaves coming out and panicked! what if they all die when (if) the real-winter comes....

thanks for alleviating my fears... I am afraid that I may send some more panicky emails in forums as I have a lot to learn about gardening and plant behaviour..
