Also trying Agapanthus, Hosta, Dicentra/bleeding heart (red and white) all from seed and I haven't a clue where to start. :dunno: Need to do a bit of online reading up. I have read the Dicentra need a cold spell then warmth but that's as far as I have got.

I m trying to grow agapanthus and hosta.. No luck so far.. Agapanthus like cold so the seeds are in compost and in greenhouse outside. Hosta likes dark and warm, so have put them in the house but covered to make sure its Dark. Its been 2 weeks, will let you know if i get any far. But if you unearth some new info plz keep me in the loop too :p

@minki , I follow the same planting plan as Kristen . I just sowed mine yesterday . I was going to try the tall thin paper pots , but I found 0.4 litre plastic drink tumblers at the supermarket 18 for £1.50 , just punched a few holes in the bottom and they are good for SPs , nice and tall . This year I am using the method on Sarah Ravens site which is plant 3 seeds per pot and discard one if all 3 germinate. So when you plant them out in April each planting will have 2 SPs in it . Hope it works !

I grew Agapanthus from seed (a packet of Blue [Headbourne Hybrids, I assume - forgotten what the variety was now ...] and a packet of White). They grew find and had a go at flowering in Second year (but I took flowers off, after checking that colour was OK, to get the plants to bulk up, so got better flowers from Year 3 onwards)

Changed my mind about the pampas and calamagrostis grass, ordered these instead:

        Reseda Odorata 'Ameliorata'
        Lobularia maritima 'Violet Queen'
        Linanthus hybridus 'Confetti'
        Cladanthus arabicus 'Criss-Cross'
        Tropaeolum peregrinum

That's only 1/3 of the garden so far. Probably going to regret this...Pretty flowers though!

As I'm just starting out as a beginner with all this, the list of things new to me that I'm having a go at this year is huge! :)

A couple that seem interesting (at least from the instructions on the back of the seed packet!) are astrantia (ruby cloud), loosestrife (atropurpurea), jerusalem sage, blue dogbane, geranium pratense (purple haze) and monkshood - all the talk of 1-4 months to germinate and putting things in the fridge is a little oo-er as I may end up with nothing but excited to have a go and see what happens!

I'm in the same situation with quite a few of my seeds this year..... a long germination period. I should have started some off two to three weeks ago but with all my 'gear' in the greenhouse, at the moment it's been delayed. This on going wind is hitting it front on and I daren't open the door. :doh:At this rate I won't be growing anything this year!

Just nipped into Wilkos this morning and bought these Cactus Dahlias £1 each . Cheapest tubers I can see on the internet are around £2.50 each :blue thumb:

£2.15 from the National Dahlia Collection, plus a quid each (average) for postage ... and they aren't tubers, they are only rooted cuttings ... but! ... you can have any variety you can think of :)

Thanks for the link Kristen :blue thumb: I looked at cactus type and there is a bewildering array of 129 varieties . I presume a rooted cutting would have formed a tuber at the end of its first season ?

Lots of stuff being grown for the first time this year.

                      Freesia doubles
                      Anemone Coronaria Sylphide
                      Zephyranthes Habranthus Robustus (Rain Lily)
                      Ranunculus Peony
                      Narcissus White Lion
                      Aquilegia
Tulips (early doubles plus some other varieties)
                      Cosmea Rose Bonbon
                      Linum Charmer
                      Californian Poppy Bridal Bouquet
                      Linaria

I've also got some new trees which I am hoping I haven't killed over winter:

                      Malus Royalty
                      Prunus Royal Burgundy

If all that comes off I'm going to have a VERY colourful garden this year!

I'm a fan :) nice pink Cherry flowers ... followed by Copper Leaf. Dunno why it hasn't got an AGM, its parent has - and that doesn't have the Copper leaf benefit.

Planted a row of them a couple of years ago with a couple of hundred quid that a distant relative left me - completely unexpectedly - although if didn't exactly cover the cost :)

Row of 10 x Royal Burgundy in front, and you may be able to just about make out a row of 5 x Prunus Taihaku behind (not the white flowering bush which is an Apple or Pear), which will hopefully add some contrast. Last year they flowered a bit earlier than the Royal Burgundy though ...
