@Sheal You can't knock M&B some can be very entertaining

 

Sorry Gail, but Mills and Boon books always have the same story line. When you've read one you've read them all. Having said that I never managed to finish the one I tried to read.

 

@Sheal I've not read many but ones I have come across have been nice but I've never took notice off what you've just mentioned..having the same story line

 

The thread running through them is: boy meets girl, they fall in love, have a row and split up, then get back together at the end of the book. I find the same with just about all romance novels which is why I don't read them. I don't read women's magazines either, it's always the same old stuff. Give me a National Geographic any day, much more interesting.

 

@Sheal What I do love dropping on his books where a person is scarred like in the Red fury I've just read or had a bad accident in their past as it makes the books more indepth when reading

 

Love the TV series of his books. Likewise the radio serials and the film of Tinker tailor. But for some reason I just cannot get on with the books.

I've just finished You Don't Have To Be Evil To Work Here But It Helps by Tom Holt. It is comic fantasy, another in the J W Wells series. Another great Tom Holt read

I'm just about to start My Italian Bulldozer by Alexander McCall Smith. One of my favourite authors, he is behind the 44 Scotland Street series of books.

 

@longk Glad your enjoying your books besides the series of them...it's funny how we all have our own enjoyment with books

 

I’m Bored...

 

Thanks @shiney but I have enough of my own books I can read but can’t get motivated at the moment.

I tend to read on line blogs which are Diaries from people all round the world or local to the UK so can read all about their daily lives,see photos of plants,flowers,birds,architecture,money saving ideas,decorating ideas,cooking etc so in a way I am doing a lot of reading but in a different way to the way most people read

Only another week and two days and with luck will be back outside and tidying up the garden and sorting plants out in the greenhouse

 

I’ve never enjoyed reading books. It’s probably because as I haven’t found the right type of books.

I have read a few books that were screenplays for films I had seen. Braveheart and Nightmare on Elm Street are two that spring to mind. The Braveheart book is written by a Wallace descendant and is therefore ever so slightly one sided (as are most historically documentaries). Being fair though, it’s supposed to be a story. Stories have goodies and baddies and happy endings (or not in his case)

I have read both Frankenstein and Dracula. Dracula is interesting for its “historic” content. The book was extremely well researched and combined elements of documented fact with popular folklore.

I have tried to read Wuthering Heights. It’s hard work. The use of dialect in conversation makes it very difficult to digest. I tried to read Ben Hur. I got bored with the build up.

Somebody earlier mentioned Tom Clancy. I started to read The Hunt for Red October. I had already seen the film so I already knew what I was reading about. The book was moving along nicely until it got to the part where the CIA man started to discover the technology behind the submarine they were chasing. In the film (I know films are different) it took about 20 seconds and one photograph to explain. In the book there were pages and pages of technical detail that went way over my head. I lost interest.

I have mentioned else where in a different thread that I find it hard to digest long complicated essay. I am more of a sundbite kind of guy. My dad was the same. He would read the newspaper from cover to cover but he wouldn’t read a book.

Short stories I can deal with. Preferably ones that take about an hour or so to read. Sherlock Holmes is a perfect example. I haven’t read any for a while but I have enjoyed the ones I read. Raffles is very similar. They are almost mirror images of each other. The writing style and character portrayals are very similar. I also have the Raffles TV series on DVD. Also very good.
