    I have a favourite book which I always break out at this time of year - A Suffolk Christmas by Humphrey Phelps.

    It's a compilation of tales and recollections by various writers, reflecting the Suffolk countryside customs and traditions of years gone by. It contains many evocative tales of how folk celebrated at this time of year and many of the recollections remind me of my own childhood Christmases.

      44CB1897-FE7E-449B-B228-AB34B1F72DB9.jpeg I bought one of the Catherine Cookson books quiet cheap last year from Selworthy church I think it was last year and then when we were visiting one of the NT houses this year found another Catherine Cookson book of books for 50p in their small charity book shop where people donate unwanted books for reselling so thought they were both a bargain:snorky:

      Have also read this year The Last Fighting Tommy by Harry Patch,and the Call the Midwife books plus 101 things you never knew about the Titanic.All these books as well were either from charity shops or the Inshore lifeboat rescue center on the Isle of Wight:biggrin:

        We usually sell a lot of Catherine Cookson books on Open Day. :dbgrtmb: They're very popular and go quite quickly.

            You Don't Have To Be Evil To Work Here, But It Helps by Tom Holt. He writes comic fantasy and is very good.

            I recently finished Blast From The Past by Ben Elton. His best book since STARK.

                I'm currently coming to the end of The Sunne In Splendour by Sharon Penman. A 1200 page novel about Edward IV and Richard III. A book that's hard to put down and Sharon is such a good, flowing writer. :)

                  @Sheal, I love the highlander romance books and the De Wolf pack was a excellent read.

                  Warwolfe (de Wolfe Pack Book 1)

                  The Wolfe (De Wolfe Pack Book 2)

                  Nighthawk: Sons of de Wolfe (de Wolfe Pack …

                  ShadowWolfe: Sons of de Wolfe (de Wolfe …

                  Serpent (De Wolfe Pack Book 2)

                  Scorpion (De Wolfe Pack Book 7)

                  Dark Destroyer (De Wolfe Pack Book 8)

                  The Lion of the North (De Wolfe Pack Book …

                  Walls of Babylon (De Wolfe Pack Book 10)

                  by Le Veque, Kathryn Le Veque

                  Now these are worth purchasing, as you get the history of Scotland, british and how they originate :)

                    Thanks @Gail_68 but I'm not a reader of romance but sometimes can't avoid it as it appears in most novels. My subject is really medieval history non-fiction, particularly Scottish history. Having said that I'm totally hooked on Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series (a romance) but there's a lot of historical fact involved in the writing too. It's a great read if you're interested. :)

                    I'm currently on the hunt for non fiction about Simon Lovat (The Old Fox) but there's very little written about him.

                      @Sheal,
                      I've just typed in (The old Fox) and just this came up [IMG]£3-75 and the other you've mentioned Outlander series, I've just added to my wish list :snorky: i'll check that out, as 2, 800 odd people have read that, it's classed as a best seller.:)

                        Thanks @Gail_68 I'll check that out. :thumbsup: All non fiction I buy in book form and keep as reference books. Anything else goes on my Kindle. :)

                        Diana Gabaldon writes big books and takes approximately three years on each one owing to the historical research. Her next release (I think book 9) will be sometime next year and I'm waiting on that. The series is now being put into televised screen form and the third series has just finished it's run on Amazon Prime, and I think ITV4. I buy the DVD's as I don't have a tv. If you watch it be warned, the love scenes are quite steamy.

                          I checked out 'Simon the Fox' @Gail_68 but it's a novel, I'm looking for non-fiction, thank you for the heads up though. :)

                            I stopped buying books about 50 years ago (except from secondhand bookshops) as I read too much to purchase them (I calculate that I've read over 15,000 books :rolleyespink:) and get most of mine from the library.

                            I also look through the hundreds of books that people drop in to us during the year to see if there's anything of interest to me, read them and then put them back in for the book sale. :blue thumb:

                              @Sheal, Sorry that was the wrong book but i'll be hunting now [IMG] when they take that long doing a book then that's a good writer.
                              I can destroy a 300 & odd story with in 2-3days and i'm always buying them. I've got a kinde but did by the e-reader 6 to stop the glare as I wear spec's and it's great.

                                @shiney,
                                I used to buy them, then a library opened by we and I used to get about 4 at a time but in the end i'd done what they had, then I started on charity shops and now it's Amazon but what your doing is the best [IMG] the amount I've given away over the years is sick :)
