Diamond earrings? or I think the idea above is nice with bed and breakfast in a posh place and then shopping

The lad and I have just got back in from town. It wasn't quite the successful mission I'd hoped for but I don't think we've done too bad and there's still tomorrow.

We bought some perfume. I had to get the lady in the shop to help because I had no idea what I was buying, but she sold me something she said was popular, and yet subtle enough so as to not be overwhelming.

Also some Thornton's chocs, gift wrapped by them because they can do a better job than me, and some sexy jimjams.

I also wanted to get an item of jewellery but there was nothing she'd like. Jewellery is the one thing that I know what sort she likes, and I just didn't see it while out, so initially I was a bit disappointed, but then I remembered something. I work in Whitby. On the old side of town (the side I work in), there are loads of little independents, many of actually run by people who make the stuff themselves so very unique. I'm also only working til lunch time tomorrow so will have plenty of time for an amble around to see what's what.

Not really any help to anyone on this subject, but it made me laugh so I thought I would share.

Each year we go and do last bit of shopping for presents and each take our son who is now 3 and a half on a 'secret mission' to buy presents for mommy and daddy. Yesterday I took him and along with other things we got mommy a new dressing gown. Two minutes after being in the car on the journey home, he pipes up from the back "mommy, we got you a dressing gown for Christmas". In unison we both said " no it's a secret" and he reply was. " do you want to see it mommy, it's very pretty"

This morning when we were brushing our teeth he says "daddy, why don't you use your electric tooth brush" I replied "because I haven't got one". His answer "you have mommy bought you one for Christmas yesterday".

When we visited Whitby last summer Mrs JWK loved all the independent jewellery shops, some were a little expensive but they were all friendly and helpful. We found some jet on the beach and one shop helped identify it - it was a tiny little fragment so no big deal.

Buying jewellery is very personal though, I'd struggle to find something that Mrs JWK likes. You could organise a day out there, and let her choose. Make up a gift card outlining what you propose, print it out in a card for Christmas day. You can combine it with a visit to Magpie's Cafe for the best Fish and Chips in the world and a romantic tour in that crazy steam bus :)

I've never been to Magpies, because I couldn't be bothered waiting in the queue, but I know people who have been there and to a few others, and all came to the same conclusion. There are better fish and chips than Magpies:) The best fish and chips I've ever eaten, bar none, came from the chippy restaurant just on the corner near the swing bridge. A very close second comes from the Ship Inn on Saltburn sea front.

one year my hubby got me a pretty shapphire necklace. After I opened the box, he said they have earrings to match. So I said, so this is half a gift.
