I work as a Carer looking after the elderly in their own homes and know exactly where you are coming from, you'd be surprised at the amount of lonely old folks in this world with family just around the corner who don't give a damn, some of the people i look after only see me once a week, sometimes i'm the only person they see week to week!!, your visit, even if it is only once every couple of weeks means the world to them, it's the company they crave, sometimes it's just a cuppa and a chat but it means a lot, its very hard not to get attached and not let their sadness get to you so don't beat yourself up, but good on you! :thumb:

Theres far tomany people whos familys dont care isnt there:( but i started my business with the elderly in mind really cos i was sick of hearing about con men ripping them off i could make more money working for people who just cant be boatherd to do the garden themselves but id sooner work for people who cant do it its more rewarding it might sound odd but one of the nicest things a customer has ever said tome is that her daughter said the garden looks as good now as when her dad was alive :)

I totally agree, I only work on the Deli at Tesco part time, have worked there 8 years and I know a lot of the regular customers of which are the elderly, their children have disappeared to different parts of the world and very rarely see them, but are still very proud of them, saying how well they have done for themselves. If they see them every 3-5 years they are lucky. When I ask if they keep in touch I get answers like, well they are very busy. It makes my blood boil, how can they neglect their parents who have probably got them to where they are today. Where I can we have a good chat and they even tell me that I am the only person they have spoken to all day. Others who are lonely tell me of their illnesses aches and pains. I listern and if I feel worried for them advise them to go and see their doctor. It makes their day, and mine also, if I can give at least a little bit of comfort to them in our little chats. (who'd be a Deli assistant?.......ME!!!) 02

Lol, Spud you need to change your job description from gardener to social services lol!!!

I remember being asked to quote once for the grounds maintance of a local care home, I was lead through a hall way with banks of chairs with elderly folk simply staring into space, it was soul destroying and depressing. No way I could do work at the place.

Good on all of you that spare 10 minutes for the elderly, or others cos it's not just the elderly that get lonely.

It is a shocking state of affairs. Makes me very upset. Still the nices thing is to do what you folks are doing - have a chat.

    cheers

I have single handedly turned a jungle of brambles and nettles into the plot for my future tropical corner (more details in my blog). In the proceedings I have brocken my back (again), blistered my hands (again), hit my shin with a hatchet (a brand new feat) and I am completely destroyed. I am also a very happy gardener, this is such a masochistic occupation.

I will try to limp, or at least crawl, to the bathing tub.
