Just before my father died he said "Careful son.......that gun is loaded"!!!:D:D:D

    Just joking, honest.

I try to forget everything my twisted swine stepfather and my evil wicked mother ever said to me. I only call my mother to protect my inheritance.

    Chopper.

My future mother-in-law's favourite phrase before my wife and I were married was: "If I were you...."
I put up with it for a while just to keep the peace. But she then said it when we were alone, so I interrupted her and replied; "Well, you're not!"

She never said it again. We got on fine after that.

I love all this..........my father's favourite saying was 'there's nothing new in the world' - we used to argue endlessly on the subject (daft or what).

Elvis continues to be one of the biggest selling pop singer in spite of his sad early demise

Well, here's another gem from the parents of Alice

#2 Cleanliness is next to Godliness

My mother was fanatical about clean - that meant us, the washing, the house, the kitchen, the paths - EVERYTHING. I think she thought if she could see a speck of dirt we would all die of the plague - instantly.
It was my job to clean and polish everybody's shoes every night. I had to do it outside as cleaning shoes in the house might have made a mess.

I tend to be a bit fussy and I'm one of those dull women who has to have the house in good order but I don't see any need for extremes of cleanliness. And people who keep their houses in an untidy state and do the minimum of cleaning are not dying with the plague and are perfectly happy.
I think my mother was well over the top on that one.

How did the rest of you fare ?

In my teens I worked in an office in the West-End.
One of my co-workers was a girl of a similar age.
She once said that at home, if she couldn't find something of her own which she'd put down, she'd ask her mother if she'd seen it. Her mother invariably found it and when asked where it was would reply; "You only had to pick something up!"
We got in contact again after fifty years via Friends Reunited. She was amazed when I told her I remembered she told me what her mother frequently said to her.

My dad when my mother urged him to change a carpet or a piece of furniture, would sometimes refuse and say; "This one will see us out!"
Sadly, of course he was right.

I'm starting to apply the same logic to a few things.

Yes, I think I've got that picture Doghouse.
Isn't it amazing what we remember other people saying - sometimes the most inconsequential things to them.
How lovely to meet someone from that length of time ago. I hope it was a happy reunion.
I have one person I would love to meet again, or at least hear from. I think we were child slaves together - well if working 60 hours a week for booga when you are 15 is slavery, then we were. But I haven't had any luck.

    Inconsequential things we remember
Why your mother needed your fathers permission to replace anything

    These could be good threads.
I'll leave them to you to start - unless someone else wants to do it.
Well the days are getting short and we do have to talk about something.

I knew I was turning into my Mother when I heard myself repeating to my own (then small) daughters 'if you speak correctly - you'll spell correctly'.

I also now understand why my Gran used to say that people only have two ages - old enough to know better and too old to care!

Sorry but I think you missed the point.

He didn't last, as he died!

I've met on-line, several old friends and work colleagues from my teenage years with whom I lost touch, through Friends Reunited. Only one from my grammar school, (we both played in the same band). I'm in regular contact with four now, by email, two with whom I haven't had a "face to face" yet. I moved away from the area when I was twenty and lost touch with many people.
What amazes me, is that after fifty years though obviously physically they've changed, their voices and mannerisms are exactly as you remember them.

yes, I'm sure that's true Doghouse.
My daughter has the mannerisms of people who were dead before she was born
And my brother has the voice of people he never met.
But that's all a different question.
Glad you found your friends - and of course nothing had changed - the leopard doesn't change its spots - or so my mother would have said.

Well, looks like no one is interested in cleanliness and Godliness
so here's another gem from the parents of Alice (think they're 2:0 down at the moment)

#3 Neither a lender nor a borrower be
I think a lot of people have been caught out by the banksters and the situation will get worse. Fortunately I did listen to my parents on this one and never owed any money. As for the lending, how many times have you loaned books, CDs, small sums of money and never got it back. It doesn't make friends, just leaves a bad taste.
I think I'll give :gnthb: to my parents on this one.
    How did you do ?
