One of the things my father used to say was "Keep your mouth shut and your ears open and you will get on in the world".

I don't know whether it was true because I could never keep my mouth shut! :hehe:

"It's far better to have wished you had said something, than wished you hadn't."

Well that made me laugh Ziggy.
I wasn't given to saying much, but every time my sister opened her mouth she was right in there. Nothing has changed :(

    Err..

I said it, not Ziggy, not that it matters.

Trouble is I sometimes think that, but later on reflection I say "nah! I'm glad I did!"

Someone on another board has as a tag line; "Lord, keep your arm around my shoulders and your hand over my mouth."

I always find that quote ironic-considering where it cam from and who it was giving this advice. The spy behind the arras lol.

My daughter too has exactly the same mannerisms as her great-grandmother (my Gran) who died 19 years before my daughter was born.

The words that stick in my mind were from my Grandad as I,aged around 8, sat next to him as he lay in his sick bed being spoon fed broth by my Mum....
" Boy,I hope you are blessed to one day have a daughter, as kind and sweet, as I have"
    I did. Now I wonder if she'll have a fantastic Son too..:D

That's lovely Paladin. Happy memories. And I hope your daughters son will be all that she wanted.
The day we hold them when they're born we have such high hopes for them.
I don't think kids get birthdays - they only see cakes and candles and presents.

On my daughters birthday I remember every minute of the day she was born - and everything I wished for her the moment I held her.

I do remember one thing my dad told me. He had taken me to see one of his regimental mates. We walked into his garage and him and my dad were soon chatting away, then they saw me looking at a topless calendar hanging on the garage wall.

My dad turned to me and said, "They look good in a picture, but you should make sure you marry a fat, tattooed woman".

I remember being puzzled by this and asked him "Why is that dad"?

His reply: "Then you will have warmth in winter, shade in summer...... and moving pictures all year round"!!

I never worked out if he was serious or not.

    Chopper.

My dad was a regular soldier before the war, 1st Battalion Grenadier Guards and was with the BEF in France in 1939, later in North Africa with the 8th Army, then Italy.
He was evacuated at Dunkirk, he never spoke much about this but he said as he was waiting to be picked up, as he looked down the beach he noticed it was "black with discarded rifles."

My mum told me the "never a lender of a borrower be" too and I have found it excellent advice. I have passed this gem on to my son and hope he follows it too.

She also said: "love flies out of the window when poverty walks in through the door" which hasn't actually happened to me, but I guess it would be true.

Father-In-Law was on Gold beach on D-Day, he said "when the Luftwaffe went over - the British ducked - when the RAF went over - the Germans ducked - but when the USAAF went over - everybody ducked !"

Well. I think we're up to #4 from the parents of Alice and they're 2:1 down.

You have no servants here and paddle your own canoe.

From a young age everyone was expected to contribute to the work of the household and be as self sufficient as they could be.
Sounds harsh but my parents were humane people. My Mother didn't go to Church on Sunday - she went to visit elderly neighbours and light their fires for them.

I think that takes them to evens in my book.
