Julie - no I didn't sandpaper the Alyogyne seeds first - perhaps I should have done. I just followed the instructions on the packet from Jungle Seeds. So far only 2 from about 12 seeds (half the packet) have germinated. But as long as I have one good plant and one spare I don't worry too much.

I am assuming that I can put them outside when the weather gets warmer. I then propose to overwinter them under glass frost free. These days I have the feeling that there are many new, good, unusual plants out there. So I treat them as I see fit - and if they don't like it they can ****** off to plant heaven and leave space for something else. :heehee: Its cruel - but then I tell my plants its an even more cruel world out there on their own.

Dave - thanks for the info. As I already have some growing lights in the house, I might treat some of my tuber/rhizomes to a bit of heat and get them out of bed a bit early. The biggest problem, as you know, is if you are successful but have nowhere to put them till the weather warms up.

This is the one that started me looking at them - Anigozanthos flavidus, taken at Oxford botanic gardens.

This is something I should have started 40 years ago :DOH:Never mind it will be my legacy to my grandkids. Mature plants are incredibly expensive in the nurseries, more than a new car :o

Yes I must do better. Reading the book about Niwaki I'm really impressed by the time and effort the Japanese put into protecting their tender plants (and they get much more extreme weather than us). The wrapped up plants are done in such a way as to look beautiful in their own right, like you say works of art. I don't think I could achieve what they do, but just a little extra time and tidiness could make a big difference:
