I think I've witnessed a sonic boom once, but not sure.

I was on an outward bounds course when I 16, staying at a hostel very close to where the RAF do their ariel combat training.

Spending a lot of time on the moors in other areas where such training happens, I'm very familiar with fighter jets suddenly flying past at insane speed, but this occasion was different. A jet went past at double-insane speed, ludicrous speed if you like, and about a second later all the windows rattled so violently I thought they were going to explode, and I swear I felt the bones of my body rattle.

I know they're not supposed to go supersonic over land, but I'm sure they must from time to time. I'm fairly sure that the time I refer to was one such occasion but can't be 100% certain.

Armandii & Capney would be the boys to ask about that. Not Jack though as I believe sound travels faster underwater so his Submarine would have to go more than 365m per second to make a boom.

Turned the air solid with a feedback loop once, that made me bones rattle.

    Hi folks.

I'm quite proud to say I worked on Concorde as a fitter during the 70's, at the Filton site. Having worked on several different projects since then, none of them give anything like the amount of satisfaction to work on. Concorde was a 'crafted' aircraft, with many parts being 'blue' fitted. It was always a special occasion when one would take off for testing or delivery. Many didn't like Concorde because of the noise, but I actually liked it, it gave a real sense of presence, wonderful. I can remember one time, myself and a work colleague were taking part of the undercarriage fairing out to the paint shop just as one was taking off. My colleague started running towards the runway holding aloft the said part and shouting "wait, you've forgotten something". Well, I thought it was funny :)
I can still remember quite clearly the day of the crash. I was sitting beside a lake, fishing for Carp, at a campsite in Cornwall. It was a lovely day, and we had the radio playing quietly. Then there was a newsflash reporting the crash. I was totally stunned, indeed, I could hardly believe my ears. So sad.
At one end of the airfield there is now a Concorde just sat there. I must say it looks a forlorn sight....

    Cheers...Freddy.

      Blimey Freddy,

Not many people can say they've done that for a living:thumbsup:

I remember getting in the van after a days work & thinking i've got to switch the radio on. There was a silent pause before the newsreader said that the Concord has crashed.:(

:cry3: I see that Concord just sitting there too Freddy if we go to the Mall from the A38 & my grandson always points at it.. So so sad to see it just sitting there deteriorating slowly at it's birthplace...... We should have it in a museum...!!

On a lighter note I had a couple of friends who worked on it too & we all had "Concord white" sprayed tanks on our motorcycles for a few years... :WINK1: :heehee:
