Does that compromise how much flower you get @Sheal?

I had a quick look at the ashridgetrees co uk and tried to sus out how much it might cost for the materials for this.... around £150..... if i'm looking at the right things. That seems very reasonable for a 25m long hedge. It's a good day up with us today so I'll keep my eye out for hedges to get some snaps of to show you what I like the look of as well as what is growing around the local area.

I'm delighted with how much response you get on this site! Such good info as well and not the usual torrent of cheek that doesn't help you at all. lol

I thought it a useful academic exercise :) so I have added an article to my blog on "What does it cost to plant a new hedge"
        http://kgarden.wordpress.com/2014/07/22/what-does-it-cost-to-plant-a-new-hedge/

        I make it:

        Price of plant e.g. £1.18
        Rootgrow + £0.11
        Number per Metre x e.g. 3
        Plant cost per metre = e.g. £3.87
        Mypex per Metre + £0.40
Leaky hose per Metre + £0.65
        Number of Metres x e.g. 25
        Total cost = e.g. £123.00

Here’s a formula that you can bung into Google, alter the figures as appropriate:

        ((( 1.18 + 0.11 ) x 3 ) + 0.40 + 0.65 ) x 25 =

I prefer the first one. Can anyone tell me what it is?

          Looks like Privet to me.

My guess is that the second one is Lonicera nitida - which gives a hedge like a sort of bigger form of Box - it can be clipped nice and tight. Privet is quite good for that too, but it will need cutting several times a year if you want to keep it "tight"

Your first photo is definitely privet. :blue thumb:

It grows very easily and is very easy to keep cut in a good shape.

Agreed. Three times a year should be sufficient and you may be able to get away with twice a year and still keep it looking good. If you use a good hedge cutter, once it has grown the way you want it, you should be able to do it in an hour or so. :)

We just need to get to know you a little bit more before the insults start flying :lunapic 130165696578242 5: Of course, it's all the others that do that - I'm a goody goody! :loll:

Ha, that sounds about right then. I'll prepare some gardening type insults for response when the cheek starts. ;)

Is it a particular type of privet I should be looking for as I had a quick search and there seems to be a couple of different types of Privet..... not quite sure what the differences are. :dunno:

Probably "green" or "golden" ... green forms are normally faster growing than yellow / red leaved counterparts.

Your picture is the green version (I think that should be suitable for you) and tell the homeowner that it's about time he cut his hedge :roflol:

That's brilliant, thank you every one for the info. I know what hedge plants I want now - Privet. I know how to plant them and how many to plant. All I need to do now is wait for the best time to plant them I think. I'm not looking forward to digging that length of trench though. :rolleyespink:

Get friends round for a garden(ing) party. You provide the drink and they do the digging :blue thumb:
