Thanks folks! Yes it was a very lucky shot. It sat on the fence for about five minutes but for nearly all the time it had its back to me. I just managed to get a couple of shots with its head turned.
In 30 years its only the second time we've seen one in the garden.

Wow oh wow what a great shot - and he posed beautifully. Thank goodness your camera was close to hand.

Thanks folks. I was really chuffed to be able to photograph it, let alone see it so close.

It's a great photo, Dave - and I see he gave you inspiration for the enhanced photo comp! ;)

I presume he's (or she's) a buzzard? I regularly see one sitting on the hedge just before the exit at junction 6 southbound on the M9 - but there's no way I can get a photo then....

We only see a few Sparrowhawks around here, fantastic shot Dave. We have Buzzards everywhere but never very close.

We see them often and quite a few buzzards too but seldom in the village. It's only the second time we've seen one in our garden.
I was working on the computer and glanced out of the window and saw what I first thought was a fieldfare sitting on the fence about 20 feet from our front door. I then realised what it was and grabbed the camera. It was intent on peering down over the fence watching for mice in the graveyard and though I took about 20 pics I only managed to get two with its head to one side. Had to take the shots through the double glazed windows as if I'd opened the door it would have been off!

A pair of choughs fly over my garden every morning, calling with their harsh cries. Apparently they are rare in the UK but there are quite a lot here. I havent a dig. camera so cannot photograph them unfortunately.
