Vapourer Moth, Roders. A curious species as the females are flightless! They release pheromones and the males come and find them! Some of my friends seemed to have girlfriends like that!!!!

Yet more super shots, thanks everybody.

I'm quite jealous as I've never found such gorgous insects in our garden.

I was just taking a picture in my front garden when this little chap landed in front of me

This fella and his misses live in the garden next door, but he is very camera shy so hard to get pictures of him

Oops, not a good neighbour for you then bobj.

I don't have any problems from this chap although he is a bit noisy, and great entertainment when he landed in my garden one day and the cat was convinced he could catch it even though the cat is a fraction of the size, he ignored the cat until the cat got too close then he flew back over the fence and scared the cat half to death!

Thanks Kandy, the blackbird was a chance shot, he only landed long enough for me to take one pic, so I was thrilled that it came out so well!!

Good shot Pete, the one on top is a 2 spot ladybird(adalia bipunctata)the one underneath looks like a Harlequin ladybird, if it was they are not native to britain and are a threat to our resident ladybirds, we have about 46 species over here all beneficial to gardeners but the harlequin can be a predator of our ladybirds so I hope when the 2 spot has had his way he doesn't get eaten.

Thanks walnut, without that link I was of a mind that the one on top was the foreigner.
I see by the map that they are pretty widespread in my area.

Great pictures Bobj they are the young of the common Garden spider(araneus diadematus) the female can lay from 3 to 5 hundred eggs if you go near them they seem to explode in all directions then regroup when danger gone they move about independently after the second moult.
