I saw these colourful insects in the Austrian Alps this past week. The bigger and fatter one was dragging the smaller one off across the road and down into a hole on the verge.

    Red Milkweed Beetle (tetraopes tetraophthalmus)

(thanks to walnut for the ID)

    Hi all

I love the info & pics on here. Well done all.

Tay, funnily enough i was talking to a bee-keeper yesterday. No i don't live in the country, don't ask me how i find these people, i just do :D

He was saying that actually his bees are doing quite well & i said i hadn't seen any this year yet. He also said that they suffer a lot more problems than they did 20 years ago. I didn't realise they had internal organs like kidneys (I think that's what he said - to be honest i got lost half way through the conversation!). We've seen a couple of huge ones here before. They do look lovely but not too close :D

Beautiful shot, Marley, lovely colours ... I've not seen one before.

I don't know if anyone knows what this critter is ... I've been trying to photograph one for over a year! It is green/blue/black metallic in colour, about 5cms long / 4cms wide (I couldn't measure and photograph at the same time  ) and bores into wood ... perhaps it should be in the Pest section ...

Lovely photos Marley the middle one of the peacock butterfly is a show stopper!

    Yoiks LOL!

Not sure at all what that fella is. I remember I was visiting my uncle in Majorca when I was 18 and found a similar type (dead)mothy thing, although not as big as your fella! I stuck it in a photo film case and into a kodak box and for some reason put an elastic band around it to prevent the lid coming off etc.

Guess what...got pulled up at Customs. Officer thought he had me nailed when he saw this suspicious package...drugs for sure....!!!!

Actually he nearly fell over when he saw it was a monster moth and ushered me out quickly - but didn't confiscate the thing???!!!!
