Thanks Walnut and Pip, and for the ID Walnut.

Mr K is always disgusted when I photograph these flies - "Ugh! a Schmeißfliege!". Now I'll probably always think about what you just told me, Walnut, whenever I photograph them.

Well done on catching a hoverfly in flight and it is a good start.

Just to cheer you up Kedi that's a Flesh fly (sarcophaga carnaria) the larvae feed on carrion oddly enough the females produce larvae rather than eggs if you had one 6 foot long you would have to put gigantea after its name (and duck when one flew past).

Thanks Walnut. What a name, made me laugh!

Even if they are flies, I think these ones are very pretty with the pattern on their backs. Also, they stay put very often, unlike the bright green ones, so it's possible to get a close-up now and then.

    Thanks Ruby!

This poor dragonfly was obviously injured. He was over at our neighbours and you could pick him up. After taking some photos, we put him out in the sunshine, where he perked up. Later on he was gone, so hope he lives for some time yet to fly around our ponds.
