This flew into the garden today and caught a pigeon as it got about three foot off the ground. Not a pretty sight :(

It took about an hour and a quarter to leave nothing for the magpies. Oscar sat comfortably in his bed in the greenhouse and watched him, lazily, the whole time. :ywn: :snz:

Lovely photos of the Sparrowhawk Shiney, though it is a pity that it's kill wasn't a Wood Pigeon instead of a Collared Dove.Oscar had the right idea at least to watch from his warm bed:)

Bob,looks like we have some of your Long Tailed Tits if yu have some missing. We had six in our back garden before Christmas and they were delightful to see

Wonderful bird photos since I was on here last. :gnthb: I do so enjoy them as I rarely have any luck to get even a bad pic of one, but perhaps soon ....

Oh, re the now ID'd beetle! Sis gave me a super book for my birthday and I thought I found my beetle in there and was just going to edit the name in when you, Bob and Walnut, came up with another name. I was going to say Oil Beetle Meloe proscarabeus. Which is correct

I found this 7cm long centipede* on our balcony on our last day in Cyprus last week.

Unfortunately, Mr Kedi refused to hold it on it's back so I could get a good picture of all those tiny little legs. They look like they have been sewn on in pairs, don't they? These are the two best out of about 20 pics.

    * I am now also undecided if this is a centipede or a millipede, i've changed my mind several times. Strongy, you said millipede when you saw my last one, here http://gardenerscorner.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=11536&page=68
Unfortunately, one like this is not in my smart new book and the two that are shown are centipedes but different, both to mine and to each other.

I think I should stop finding these critters when I am on holiday. :D

Anyway guys, I need two ID's and if all of you agree on the same thing, then that is what is right. Thanks!

While out in my back garden earlier this afternoon, I stood 6 feet from one shrub and two Long-Tailed Tits were sitting on the top as my dog ran about.

Millipede as Strongy says Kedi, from your excellent photos Kedi you can see the millipede has two pairs of legs on each segment had it been a Centipede there would have been one pair each segment.

That's an easy way to identify them - thanks Walnut xx

I have some pics of other millipedes taken on our recent holiday, all in our hotel grounds. Does that tell us anything?

Quite recently, I have been putting bird food out in the front garden as well as the back. While sittting reading the papers today, a movement caught my eye and so when I looked out the window, for the first time, I saw and counted 10 Long-Tailed Tits before a car came screaming up the road and they flew. There were more I know, but had it not been for that dammed car, I might have seen just how many there actually were. I had never seen more than three together before then.
