These two houses in Portsmouth always have a very colourful display and a different theme each year

Gooseberries, hope that i get to them before the black birds. The parents leave them by the fruit and say to them, you'll be alright here lots to eat.

A plant from yesteryear, not grown very often these days - the gorgeous Gloxinia with its massive trumpet shaped flowers.
In 5" pots for a sense of scale.

I used to grow Gloxinia from seed, they would flower first year and I'd save the tubers of the best for the following year.

                              Hi Victoria,

They look almost like roses , very fancy !
Expect you can grow yours outside, inside only for ours.

Gloxinia tubers are not that commonly sold here and the few that are always seem to be the Single types.
Seems you can buy the Doubles as seeds, but expect it would take 2-3 years to make a decent sized plant ..?
Edit - missed @pete comment - seems they will flower the first year so one to try !

Have another 3 waiting for their flowers to open, hopefully different colours, as they are in the same family and like the same conditions as the Streps, hopefully we can get the best out of them.
