I find that I'm rather ambivalent about it. I have never had an inclination to use it or even look at it and I don't really know a great deal about it. So I'm not really qualified to comment - but I never let that stop me. :hehe:

I have a very busy life and get the impression that Twitter is another complication I don't really want. The two forums that I use take up what little spare time I have in my 20 hour days. I just don't have time to follow what other people are doing in their lives and if I spent time writing on Twitter I wouldn't have time to do what I already do.

Sorry this next is off topic. On the comment that Doghouse made about mobile phones - I have to agree but think it is now a 'generation thing'. My mobile is for emergencies (Mrs shiney adding things to my shopping list is an emergency :lollol:) and I spend about £2 per year pay as you go. Texting seems to me to have caused a more antisocial effect. I have experienced what people refer to as the apocryphal young people texting each other whilst in the same room  and object to friends and acquaintances breaking off conversations to reply to texts. To be sitting in a restaurant with friends who reply to texts that aren't urgent I find is just rude. Earlier this year we were walking with friends in the middle of nowhere in the Lake District and one of our friends spent about half an hour on her Blackberry during the walk responding to texts that were all social ones. We found it much easier just to not bother to include her in the conversations.

I suppose that going off topic is a little bit like breaking off a conversation to do some texting but it isn't really interrupting anyone elses discourse. :flag:

As I understand it, a 'tweet' is 140 characters which is just about the attention span of the average 'twitterer' or whatever they're called.

(The above is 140 characters. QED?)

Hmmm I must be one of the few who goes against the flow here. Having 5 (modern) children, who now have left home but who all use Twitter and whom I "follow".

Whilst I personally do not send out Twitters it allows a feeling of being part of their day and keeps me in touch with what is happening. Phone calls before were what are you upto, getting a response of "Nothing reall" (3 are boys after all !), I can now start the conversation by saying "Did you enjoy your party/quiz night/shopping trip" based upon what they have been twitting.

A secondary item is that I know when not to ring them because they are out/at work/in the University library/etc.

So, Twitter, yep I get something out of it.

Don't Tweet, don't know how to and don't want to anyway.
    Same with FB.

And Farmville - give me a break. One mother shook her child to death because his crying was interrupting her game and another was so busy feeding her virtual animals, her real children starved to death.

No thanks. At least with forums you get some meat in the trivia sandwich!

Someone I know met his current lady on something similar to Farmville and divorced his wife of 35 years. The only comment that I can make about that is that he is happier than he has been in years and they are now living very happily together in the real world.

That is a one off, but more children have been harmed as a result of drinking. Should that stop people from enjoying a glass a wine ?

A person who would harm a child is just that, a child harmer, the cause, be it drugs, drink, computer games does not matter, they will start harm a child so you can't really blame Farmville for that now can you ? :cnfs:

Fortunately, mobiles are banned anywhere on our golf course and on the clubhouse premises. There's a "deathly silence" if someone's goes off in the diningroom, they look very embarrassed, apologise and dash outside to take their call.

If someone wants to use their phone, they have to go out into the car park with it. However we do make sure someone has one with them when we're out on the course in case of medical emergencies, as parts of it are approaching a mile from the clubhouse.

Thanks for explaining it so well Axl.
I don't have it. But now rethinking about getting it. It is nice to be able to view what others think about a topic, never know what you could learn.

Both Facebook and Twitter are clearly in the hands of the young ones and for me not easily accessible nor useful although I would gladly go along with them if I was able to understand how they work.

My children are both clearly adept with these communication channels but show no sign of assisting me to join in ....... probably a message there. One thing for sure is that my daughter who is wheelchair bound gets tremendous enjoyment from Facebook but not so much from Twitter.

Can you explain the relevancy or indeed how you can differentiate between the two due to being wheelchair bound? (I'm asking that question on behalf of Mrs Axl who is registered disabled and has just raised an eyebrow in my direction :skp:).

With regards to your point on demographics I'm 36 and use Twitter, my mum's in her 70's and has a facebook account. I use Twitter for reasons outlined previously, my mum plans her school reunions and keeps up to date with her childhood friends on a monthly basis which helps her as in recent years due to looking after infirm relatives she's struggled to find the time to write her weekly letters.

Don't try to understand how they work, if you can use this forum you can them more easily!

Facebook is easy, just sign up and go with it. I keep in touch with my Son who lives in Wales via Facebook, he posts YouTube films he thinks I will like, also pieces of music it's just more versatile than a plain email.
Get on there barnaby, you know you want to!!! :yez:

But you can do that with an e-mail, just stick any video on YouTube and add the link. You can make the video as private as an e-mail.
