If the maggot problem persists use them for making Plum Wine, but add some Bentonite to the must to avoid getting a protein haze.

        Might be bacterial canker.

Just a few tips from prime plum-growing country, (anyone heard of pruneaux d'Agen?) ;)
They need water at the critical stage of fruit-set. If they dry out at the roots, the fruit will drop.
They get aphids. Aphids poo all over the leaves hence the black deposits.
They get maggots. You can spray against both pests or, as an alternative, use pheromone traps early in the Spring to catch the male plum moths and stop the hanky panky that leads to the maggots! Soapy water and/or ladybirds, lacewings and wasps all sort out the aphids, but it takes nerves of steel and patience.
Bacterial canker, well, AFAIK there's not a lot you can do about that...prune out the affected branches in a dry spell in summer and burn them. When it's in the trunk, I'm afraid it's curtains.
On the bright side, whereas in the UK we all believe that you should never re-plant the same genus in the same spot, here they just bung a replacement in (probably with a healthy dollop of fertiliser and de-compaction of the soil) and off it goes!
          Here endeth the lesson:redface:

Sorry, joolz68  Cherries, plums and apricots all seem to get it to some degree but it's sad when the trunk's affected.....
Didn't know that Magnolias are susceptible too :thud:
