What Jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2014..

Sowing pumpkin seeds inside and planting annuals outside; cutting back a huge climber rose and preparing to tie some of its enormous branches to the wall; weeding; dug in some compost to the garden.

 

Took down the greenhouse staging, I need the floor space this year!!

 

What are you planning on Val ??

 

Bigger pots and taller plants!! I actually don't use the staging that often.

 

I use the space on the staging and, almost as much, the floor space under it.

 

Nothing outside today - cold and rainy - but over the weekend pricked out the second sowings of sweet peas - 3 to a pot - basket type and high scent (can't wait !!!) Pricked out some dahlias - dropped a tray of shasta daisy seedlings - they were very small - salvaged a few - need to sow more now (that's the second tray I have dropped this year already) - took down more tomato seedlings in cells - covered with propagator lid - those taken down a week ago are doing OK. No delphiniums up
Indoors sowed last of annuals - Lobelias, Petunias, Marigolds, Tagetes, Salvia - moved more busy lizzies, antirrhinums and bacopa to cells.

Feeling optimistic today so sowed seeds of Thunbergia grandiflora!!! put them in the heated propagator under grow lights!!

I've been potting in the greenhouse today and quite warm with the sun for company.

I've started off some Calla Lilies in a large pot, new to me and my garden so I'll have to wait and see how they do this year.

Potted on basket trailing Sweet Peas and Arctotis.

Digging - I always seem to have some digging to do! Got a bed turned over, pulled out more old roots (never seem to get them all out) and dug in some fertiliser. Might even get to plant something in there soon!

 

Laying woven mulching fabric along a hedge - that I planted over a year ago and didn't get around to and the weeds are starting to encroach. Mrs K has always done that job before, but this year said she is short of time and would be better weeding as she can stop/start more easily than doing the Mulching Fabric. I am optimising how I do it and I reckon I will be much quicker than how she did it anyway ... so double-bonus

 

I've been seeing what has and has not survived the winter. Most of the first year monarda have gone, and geranium Rozanne, which is particularly disappointing, and one or two of the smaller penstemon. In my Devon garden this is odd as we have rarely had frost and no flooding despite plenty of rain. Some of the heucheras are looking a bit tatty but most of them are ready to be split and potted on. It pays to pay more for bigger plants sometimes. All I need now is a nice fairly dry warmish day.

 

I kept my 1st year Monardas in pots in the green house,probably same deal, tipped one over and some lovely strong shoots coming, , I have sorted out a hanging basket I left over winter, supposed to be Begonia tubers, somehow I had 3 small calla lilies in it, so re-potted the tubers in fresh compost and also the callas into a separate pot, Sweet peas are coming well, may pot them into their pots on weekend, and keep in the G/H. . Had a potter round the front but lawn still wet, signs of growth on the hardy Fuchsias, if we get the promised lovely weather I will get a start on the weeding. .

 

Lovely day today - was very warm in the greenhouse - pricked out (almost) the last of the Dahlias, and some basket pansy (3 to a pot again ) split a couple of small pots of parsley and potted up some Garlic Chives, sowed some Spring Onions in a small trough - checked on a couple of chrysanth cuttings - looked very flopped - quick read up - brought them indoors for a bit of under-heat. Doubt they will do anything, will take more.

Laying woven weed suppressing fabric along the hedges I planted last year. Should have done it last year really! but didn't get too much weed that first year. Anyways, I don't want to weed them at all this year, and I want to keep the moisture in so ... laying fabric along them

And a leaky-hose

 

I used to have a huge, almost invasive, clump at my last house. In two summers here I have not got them to settle in and have even lost them this winter.
