What Jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2014..

Not a lot, drove a 70 mile round trip to Pontypridd this morning, and that combined with, weeding yesterday left me with a sore back, and, it was cold with fog masking the sun.

 

Yesterday sowed my Parsnips and planted my onion sets on the plot,then in the greenhouse sowed my sweet corn.Then did a bit of digging round my fruit bushes (as I needed some worms for fishing today another day away from the plot ) as you will see I have to force myself to tidy up.

 

Today I have been refilling the greenhouse with fresh soil,(ever year I dig out all my soil 1 spade depth deep ,fork over the bottom spit and also dig in some well rotted manure) .I have also pricked out some cabbage and lettuce plants.

 

Just finished planting 40 ivy (cuttings taken late last year ) along the fence right hand side of the garden long story ... dont ask ....
the 20 left going to put 4 or 5 cuttings in to separate larger pots that I will grow on, any gaps next year I can in-fill with these.

60 plants, all that it cost me was the compost as the parent plants on the left hand side of the garden so very pleased with the outcome I did have a little production line going as I find they root in water really easily then once I have roots they get potted up into a mix of multi and silver sand 50%

3 varieties Golden child, Gold heart , and I forgot the other one .

Cut back all the old tatty fern fronds from last year so does look much tidier, daffs have had the best year in ages for flowers and not getting bashed by wind and rain.

Re-potted two of my Saraccenia

Found vine weevils in the strawberry plants , one looked a bit wilted which I thought odd , so easily came out and could easily see the little white grubs over 20 I have found , not good !!!
Birds have had them as I put in a pot saucer on the lawn , so I will have to decide take all out and re start they are about 4 years old so could do with replacing with fresh ones .

@Jenny namaste potted on the rooted cutting(cape Fuchsia) that Jens kindly sent me last year so thats looking healthy and lots of new growth from the base.

Potted on Mrs Pollock geranium cuttings taken late last year as well .

Still waiting on the lawns to dry out before the 1st cut of the year another week of drying winds should help

Lawns had first cut, Staff (chooks )currently scarifying it....made half of the border near the garage bigger...that was hard work....mixed compost with FYM and filled containers for my main crop spuds/experiment....planted main crop spuds....faffed about in the GH watering and staring ....there's alot more on my list i haven't got round to but the Chicken is cooked for tomorrows lunch and done some baking.....how much more do you want me to do

 

OH has mowed the lawn for the first time this year too

 

I sat down with mug of tea and relaxed for the first time

 

My OH wanted to cut the grass...(only because it involves petrol and noise) so told him to go out on his motor bike....

 

Me and my my mate got our spuds planted into potato bags. Hope they like manure! Looked through my seed tins to see what else I can sow. Decided on Cosmos, Morning Glory and Black Eyed Susan. The Rudbeckia and Trifolium Rubens I sowed on Thursday are up already! I had good results last year sowing HA's direct into containers. I'll do that again this year but I think I'll wait a while for that.....just hope the bees appreciate these flowers.

 

Just potted on some plug plants I bought last week.

Next door neighbour dug up two large and two dwarf Rhododendrons from my front, which his son is having. Glad he did them rather than me because the root balls on those things get very heavy. Need to decide what I'm going to fill the holes with again. This will only be the third time in three years I've re-done my borders It's good in a way though because some of the plants which are now in planters will be going into the ground, hence less planters to trip over.

 

Very tempting shiney - there is a certain person at work and he's very short so wouldn't take up much space
