I have some Lychnis, which I grew from seed. They made nice plants, and now (a couple of years on) are a serious clump. They are decently Red, but that Vesuvius looks seriously red :) I'm happy to grow some from seed next year if you give it the thumbs-up for red-ness :)

Planted out tomatoes. The hard part was getting their stakes a foot down into the ground. It was such a beautiful day I actually finished manicuring the grass around the stepping stones... just didn't want to stop pottering. :spinning:

I've been labouring under the burning midday sun, getting a few more seeds into the allotment. Mad dogs and Welshwomen! Hope I've not got burnt, I had factor 25 on. Having a lovely cup of tea indoors now.

                TOMATOES TODAY
Planted up a patio pot of Garten Pearl and Tumbling Toms for a neighbour. Then the 2 window boxes under the kitchen window = A Maskotka either end and a Tumbling Tom in the middle - in both of the boxes. More patio pots for 3 other neighbours in the morning and start thinking about which cordons to grow in tall Asda pots on the patio and the 3 Asda pots up against the south facing garage wall. Also have 3 more seedling Tumbling Toms to pot up. At least some Toms are starting to leave home at last,
                Jenny

Amongst other things I pruned back the Forsythia. Actually, it turned into a hatchet job and it looks like a bleedin' pineapple now:lolpt:

I tied back the Clematis on the Trellis Entrance, which seems to be an almost daily job to do now, and then I also tied back and weaved some of the Honeysuckle and Roses at the sides of the Arbour so it looks tidier. The next thing was a trip into the Green House to get trays of surplus seedlings and plant up about 15 or so 18 inch pots which were lying empty, using up over 300 litres of compost, and it's going to be interesting to see how they look as there's quite a few varieties of plants stuffed in them:heehee:
A mug of tea and a sit in the Abour got me in the mood to break out the Chest Waders and go for a wade in the pond to clean out the rotting stems, leaves, etc in the water. It also gave me a chance to cut out the dead stems of the marginals while in the water as they're usually impossible to reach from the bank. I had to feel my way along the bottom of the pond with my hands and lift out some of the mud and dead vegetation on the bottom which all got put on the bank until tomorrow giving the bugs in there a chance to get back into the water. Then it was a scramble out of the pond leaving it looking like a mud pond so that I could hang the Chest Waders up in the Sun to dry. The pond water will be clear again by tomorrow and then I'll put all the debris onto the Compost Heap!!:hapydancsmil::snork:

Done some weeding, tied in clematis and honeysuckle, planted some geraniums and night scented stock I got off freecycle.
Stained the back fence before I start planting my hardy exotic area of my garden.

Decided it was time to put the Frogs Band out for the summer so made a Stand :)

Following early acquisition of some Bamboo

                            see Recent Purchases thread :)

I have planted it along the front of Leylandii <Spit!> hedge which provides the backdrop for my exotic garden:

and created an "opening" in the middle for my Band. Looking from the lawn across the pond it is possible to see the exotic garden (although it is deliberately disguised), and I now realise it will be possible, with some low planting in the middle, to create a vista to the Frogs Band's Stand :)

Here's the Stand from the path within the exotic garden, with a shaggy backdrop from the newly planted Bamboo:

I'll make a T-junction and a little path leading to them next.

As usual, I said I won't do too much today as I have to be careful with my side and ribs and, as usual, I ignored my good advice!

Early morning I did two and a half hours of mowing. Then I went out to buy another 280 litres of compost (as well as other shopping).

I was going to have a rest during the hottest part of the day but the way the weather's going I would be indoors all day. It's now 4.55 and the temperature in the main garden is 82.1F (28C) and it's about 5F lower in the rest of the garden.

I've made a load of deer deterrents and hung them on the deer fence. Trimmed about 600ft of lawn edges, did some weeding and tidying up and kept moving the sprinkler all around the garden after spreading six barrow loads of compost.

The birds then reminded me that the feeders needed filling :)
