What Jobs are we doing in the Garden today 2014..

Like Loli - mostly indoor gardening really - took down a few pots of English Thyme surface sown in pots under the lights that have now sprouted - now under prop lid in greenhouse. Brought up some small cell trays with lids to accommodate the begonias which are not doing well in the seed tray (despite weak feeding them) and might need potting on - though they are so small I might need a magnifying glass

Sowed Jalapenos, Fresno and Sweet Peppers on heat mat. Doing sweet peas today.

My plot is so darn wet I've not been able to do a lot....some pruning to my Rambler, that's about it!

 

Pruned some roses and buddleia this morning. Really wasn't sure whether to do the roses or not as they are all still producing some buds but as I have no clue what the weather is going to do from one day to the next there doesn't seem to be a right time this winter.

 

Ditto with the non working in the garden.

So I have been sowing seeds for my strawberries and cape gooseberries.

Transplanted some pepper and chilli seedlings.

Watered my plants and tidied conservatory trying to make way for some shelving that I hope will be coming next.

 

New border on the left, new fence at the back.

 

Today was spent barrowing split conifer logs to the woodstore, after the tree-surgeon had split them for me

Then wandering around the garden, trying to take similar "update" photos to the ones I took soon after moving in, about 17 months ago.

Now thawing out, and drying off, indoors!

 

Still too wet outside.

So I planted some seeds... 2 types of leeks, 3 types of lettuce, thyme, red onion seeds, spring onions. Transplanted some coriander seedlings. So flipping cold in the garage, so stopped and came back in for a hot cappuccino.

 

Made 81 newspaper pots and pricked out the chitted Sweet Peas. Potted up 20 or so chitted Broad Beans too

 

Kristen - I didn't chit my sweet peas - (sorry !) - but seriously - have I done wrong ? - thought I had read not always necessary ? perhaps I will have a dig in the soil to see what's happening - have had them on top of the lamp for gentle heat for a few days

I've never chitted Sweet peas Sumbody and had no problems with germination.

 

You didn't chit them? That's really shocking ...

Nah, the seeds won't care . I put mine on damp kitchen paper, and cover (cling film or in a ziplock bag) to stop the kitchen paper drying out, then when they have germinated / "chitted", I put the good ones one-per-pot. That way I don't waste any compost / pot-growing-space (the later being my most critical factor) on seeds that don't germinate, and I don't waste seed by sowing, say, 3 per pot and then pulling 2 up and chucking them.

 

Moved some Forgetmenots into some containers...i haven't planted bulbs this year so they'll give a bit of spring colour.....did a bit of muck spreading on my veg patch,gave up on my cabbages as they just weren't growing....so dug them up and blanched what was worth it and the rest the chooks are feasting on....WAS going to thin out my Gooseberrys ....anyone seen my secateurs....
